Dolphins Fire General Manager Chris Grier Amidst Team Struggles
Miami Gardens, FL – The Miami Dolphins have fired General Manager Chris Grier, the team announced Monday, marking a significant shift in leadership as the institution navigates a disappointing 2025 season. While the future remains uncertain, head coach mike mcdaniel will remain in his position, sources confirm.
Grier’s departure comes after nearly a decade at the helm, beginning in 2016. He initially delivered immediate results, guiding the dolphins back to the playoffs in 2016 – their first postseason appearance since 2008. However, sustained success proved elusive, with Miami missing the playoffs for the following five seasons.
Under Grier, the Dolphins reached the postseason in 2022 and 2023 under McDaniel, falling in the wild-card round each time – 34-31 to the Buffalo bills in 2022 and 26-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. Despite these recent playoff berths, the Dolphins continue to hold the NFL’s longest drought without a postseason victory, a streak extending back to 2000. During Grier’s nine full seasons, Miami never won the AFC East, finishing second place six times.
Grier oversaw three head coaching changes during his tenure. He initially hired Adam Gase in 2016, who went 23-25 over three seasons before being fired. Brian flores followed, lasting three years before his own dismissal in 2021 after failing to reach the playoffs. McDaniel was Grier’s final head coaching hire in 2022, and the team promptly qualified for the postseason. However, a disappointing 8-9 record in 2024 and a rocky start to the 2025 season, including a key injury to receiver tyreek Hill (a season-ending knee injury with multiple torn ligaments in Week 4), contributed to the decision to move in a new direction.
recent struggles have also included consecutive losses to the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers by a combined five points, sparking questions about team leadership from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who later apologized for his comments after McDaniel stated the postgame press conference was not the “proper forum” for such a message. A 31-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 7 led to Tagovailoa being benched in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers, though McDaniel left the door open for a potential permanent change, stating “everything’s on the table.”
Grier initially took over as GM following the firing of head coach Joe Philbin during the 2015 season, when interim coach Dan Campbell went 5-7. The organization now begins the search for a new general manager to build upon the foundation laid by McDaniel.
