Italy Weather: African Anticyclone Ends, Rain & Snow Forecast March 8-11

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 26, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Italy is bracing for a shift in weather patterns, moving from an extended period of high pressure dominated by an African anticyclone to a return of rain and potential snowfall, according to forecasts from meteorologist Mario Giuliacci.

Giuliacci, in recent reports, has outlined a two-phase weather system. The first phase, characterized by the prolonged influence of the African anticyclone, is expected to last until approximately March 6-7. The anticyclone’s core is currently positioned over Tunisia and Libya, with warmer air currents extending towards Italy. However, Giuliacci cautioned that clear skies will not be universal, noting that the Alps will be the only region experiencing consistently sunny conditions, while the rest of the country will likely see fog or overcast skies.

Coastal areas are particularly expected to experience localized showers. A brief interruption to the high-pressure system is anticipated between March 1 and 2, with a North Atlantic disturbance bringing rainfall to Northern Italy before the anticyclone reasserts its dominance through March 6-7.

The weather pattern is then forecast to change dramatically starting March 8. Giuliacci predicts a return to widespread rainfall, particularly across Central and Southern Italy, with lighter precipitation in the North. A significant development is the potential for snowfall at altitudes between 9 and 11 March on the Alps and the central-northern Apennines, with a probability estimated between 30 and 50 percent. This could bring snow to sectors of the central Apennines as well. A general cooling trend is expected across the entire Italian peninsula concurrent with the shift in precipitation.

Recent reports indicate that temperatures could reach as high as 25 degrees Celsius in Sardinia during a period between March 20 and 21, as the African anticyclone extends its influence across Italy. However, the immediate forecast focuses on the approaching change in conditions and the potential for colder temperatures and snowfall in the coming days.

Hanoi and much of Vietnam are bracing for a mix of cloudy skies, scattered showers and cooler temperatures on February 23rd, according to national weather forecasts. The capital city will see a low of 20-22 degrees Celsius and a high of 24-26 degrees Celsius, with rainfall expected in the morning and evening.

Northern Vietnam will experience similar conditions, with temperatures ranging from 19-22 degrees Celsius, potentially dropping below 18 degrees Celsius in some areas. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the morning, giving way to localized light rain and eventual clearing in the afternoon. Temperatures could reach as high as 29 degrees Celsius in certain zones.

The Northeast region will as well see cloudy skies and rain in the morning and evening, with scattered showers throughout the day. Low temperatures of 19-22 degrees Celsius are expected, with some mountainous areas falling below 16 degrees Celsius. Highs will reach 23-26 degrees Celsius.

From Thanh Hoa to Hue, the weather pattern shifts slightly. Northern areas will be cloudy with scattered showers and morning fog, clearing in the afternoon. Southern areas will experience cloudy skies with sunny spells and scattered evening showers. Minimum temperatures will be 20-23 degrees Celsius, with maximums of 25-28 degrees Celsius, potentially exceeding 29 degrees Celsius in places.

The south-central coast will be mostly cloudy with occasional clearings during the day and scattered showers in the evening and overnight. Winds will be light, blowing from the northeast to east at forces 2 to 3.

The Central Highlands will experience cloudy skies with some clearings, and scattered evening and nighttime showers. Temperatures will range from a low of 17-20 degrees Celsius to a high of 29-32 degrees Celsius.

Southern Vietnam will see alternating cloud cover and sunshine, with localized heat and scattered evening and nighttime showers. Minimum temperatures will be 22-25 degrees Celsius, rising to 31-34 degrees Celsius, and 34-36 degrees Celsius in the eastern region.

Ho Chi Minh City is forecast to have a low of 23-25 degrees Celsius and a high of 32-34 degrees Celsius, with cloudy skies, occasional clearings, and scattered showers in the evening and overnight. Winds will be light.

Recent reports indicate Vietnam has been proactive in managing public health concerns, having reported zero deaths related to the coronavirus as of early 2023, demonstrating a swift and decisive response to the pandemic. [3]

Elsewhere, Vietnam recently adjusted traffic regulations in anticipation of a potential visit from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a summit, though details remain limited. [2] The country is also seeing increased tourism to former battlefields as the Vietnam War recedes into history. Cantù Carnival: Huge Crowds & Final Parade Tickets on Sale

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 17, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Cantù’s centennial Carnival celebration drew nearly 8,000 attendees to its third and penultimate parade on Sunday, approaching the maximum capacity of the event space around Corso Unità d’Italia, according to organizers.

The event, marking the 100th edition of the Carnevale Canturino, is seen as a successful “dress rehearsal” for Saturday’s final parade, which will conclude this year’s festivities. Sunday’s attendance of 7,460 ticketed spectators, combined with approximately 500 participants in the parade itself, brought the total estimated crowd size to 8,000, according to Fabio Frigerio, president of the Associazione Carnevale Canturino.

“The weather was absolutely benign,” Frigerio said. “It felt like spring: everyone was happy.”

The surge in attendance follows a gradual increase throughout the carnival season, with 2,500 attendees at the first parade in early February, held in 5-degree Celsius temperatures, and 5,000 at the second parade. Organizers are now focused on streamlining access to the parade route for Saturday’s event, planning to increase the number of volunteers checking tickets at the entrance to reduce queueing.

Sunday’s parade featured floats from local groups including Bentransema, Lisandrin, Il Coriandolo, Amici di Fecchio, Gruppo Mirabello, Buscait, and Baloss. Participating groups from outside Cantù included the Gerenzano musical corps, with young performers dressed as animal-themed majorettes, and the Uboldo wind orchestra.

Tickets for Saturday’s final parade will go on sale Tuesday at 9:00 AM via the diyTicket website, with the option of online purchase or collection from various tobacconists, including those outside of Cantù.

In addition to the parades, the Carnevale Canturino is hosting new events this year within a temporary structure on Via Colombo. A free children’s carnival is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 PM, and a masked ball with live music from The Funky Machine will take place on Saturday evening, with tickets priced at 15 euros including one drink.

Hérault: Storms Nils & Oriana – 6,000 Homes Still Without Power, Situation Improving

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 16, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

The Hérault department is seeing improving weather conditions as of Monday, February 16, 2026, following several days of severe storms. The prefecture confirmed that wind intensity is decreasing across the territory, with the strongest gusts now reaching 90 to 100 km/h in the northwest and a further reduction to 60 to 70 km/h expected. The yellow alert for strong winds has been lifted.

At the height of the storms on February 12, approximately 45,000 homes were without power. Enedis, the French electricity distribution network operator, has restored power to 39,000 of those homes. As of today, 6,000 homes remain without electricity, primarily in the western part of the department. The storms, Nils followed by Oriana on February 14, caused significant damage to infrastructure, including downed trees, damaged pylons, and severed cables, complicating restoration efforts.

Despite challenging conditions – waterlogged ground and obstructed access – Enedis teams continue working with reinforced personnel and equipment. Eleven rural communes in the upper cantons and the Minervois region are under enhanced monitoring due to a significant number of ongoing outages, including Saint-Vincent-d’Olargues, La Caunette, Le Soulié, Cambon-et-Salvergues, Fos, Fraisse-sur-Agout, Combes, Saint-Jean-de-Minervois, Boisset, Ferrals-les-Montagnes and Rieussec.

Enedis has been in direct contact with each mayor of the affected areas to assess local situations and tailor responses. The deployment of generators has significantly improved conditions in several communes, particularly for priority sites and town centers. Telephone networks are also showing strong improvement, with coordinated interventions leading to a gradual restoration of coverage in previously impacted areas, according to the prefecture.

Local authorities are assessing the damage caused by the successive storms. In Béziers, Mayor Robert Ménard reported that 260 trees were uprooted, some falling on parked vehicles and rooftops. “The teams remain fully mobilized to secure the affected areas and clear debris,” Ménard stated. The traditional cemetery was reopened this weekend, but the new cemetery will remain closed until all uprooted trees are removed. Ménard visited affected residents and municipal technical teams working to address the situation.

Authorities remind the public to observe the following safety precautions: never touch downed power lines; never handle objects in contact with electrical lines; respect safety perimeters and intervention zones; and report any incidents to Enedis at 09 726 750 34. Generators should be installed strictly outdoors with the circuit breaker switched off.

The prefect of Hérault praised the commitment of Enedis agents, state services (DREAL, DDTM, ARS), firefighters from the Sdis 34, and national police and gendarmerie forces, as well as the Departmental Council, for their tireless efforts to serve the population.

Snow Returns: Belgium Braces for Widespread Winter Weather

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 15, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

A nationwide alert has been issued for Belgium as significant snowfall is expected to begin overnight, according to meteorologist Luc Trullemans. The warning, issued on the evening of Saint Valentine’s Day, anticipates widespread disruption as the weather system, originating in Scandinavia, moves across the country.

Trullemans cautioned that the snowfall will intensify tomorrow, impacting all regions of Belgium. The alert level is set to rise to yellow across the entire country starting at 13:00 hours today, indicating potentially hazardous conditions.

Recent reports indicate a sharp drop in temperatures, with some areas experiencing lows of -10°C this weekend. This cold snap precedes the arrival of the Scandinavian weather system, creating conditions conducive to substantial snow accumulation.

Several news outlets are reporting on the impending weather event. DHnet reports that landscapes will be “parsemed de blanc” (sprinkled with white), while 7sur7.be states that no region will be spared. La Libre.be details the expected impacts and the activation of the yellow alert.

The approaching snowfall follows a period of extreme cold that impacted Belgium earlier this month, as reported by Luc Trullemans on January 5th. That earlier cold snap prompted warnings about treacherous road conditions.

While the immediate focus is on the snowfall, the timing also coincides with the approaching school carnival holidays. The potential for travel disruption and hazardous conditions during this period is a key concern.

Enedis Mobilizes 3,000 to Restore Power After Storm Nils

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 12, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Enedis has doubled its emergency response teams, deploying 3,000 personnel to restore power to approximately 900,000 homes across France left without electricity following the passage of Storm Nils, the company announced Thursday.

The escalation from an initial mobilization of 1,500 technicians reflects the storm’s unexpectedly wide impact, according to Hervé Champenois, Enedis’s crisis director. “We had 1,500 technicians pre-mobilized thanks to weather forecasts, who are already on the ground, and we are strengthening the deployment to bring the number of people able to carry out repairs to 3,000,” Champenois stated during a press briefing.

The majority of outages are concentrated in the Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions. Enedis’s response includes 1,000 of its own technicians, supplemented by 400 personnel from external companies, including tree surgeons to clear debris obstructing repairs, Champenois explained.

Champenois characterized the storm as “quite exceptional” in its scope, necessitating the increased resources. In addition to personnel, 170 kits of equipment have been dispatched to affected areas. 200 generators and helicopters are on standby awaiting authorization to begin operations.

The current situation is comparable to that of Storm Ciaran, which struck northwestern France in November 2023, cutting power to 1.2 million homes in Brittany and Normandy, Champenois noted. Like Ciaran, Nils is characterized by “very strong winds” causing trees to fall and “heavy rains,” leading to flooding that is expected to complicate restoration efforts.

Enedis teams worked overnight to remotely restore power to some customers. Champenois declined to provide a timeline for full restoration of power to all affected households.

A driver was killed in the Landes region when struck by a branch dislodged by the storm’s winds, according to reports.
