whatsapp Launches In-App Translation Feature, Breaking Down Language Barriers
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – whatsapp users on iOS and Android can now seamlessly translate messages within the app, the company announced today. The new feature allows for instant translation of both individual messages and entire chats, facilitating communication with contacts who speak different languages.
Initially, the translation tool supports a range of widely-used languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, with plans to expand the language list in future updates.
A key focus of the rollout is user privacy. WhatsApp confirmed that all translations are processed directly on the device, utilizing downloaded language packages for faster performance and ensuring message content remains private.
The feature extends beyond one-on-one conversations, functioning within group chats and channel updates as well. This broad submission aims to simplify cross-lingual communication for a wider range of WhatsApp users.
Currently, the translation feature is exclusive to the mobile versions of WhatsApp. The company has not yet announced a timeline for availability on web or Windows applications. WhatsApp also noted that the update is being distributed gradually, meaning not all users will have immediate access.
