Guangzhou Metro to Accept International Contactless Payments Starting October 2025
Guangzhou, China – In a move to enhance convenience for international travelers, the Guangzhou Metro will begin accepting contactless payments from major international bank cards starting October 12, 2025. The upgrade allows passengers to simply tap their cards for seamless entry, eliminating the need to purchase tickets or utilize mobile apps.
The new system supports Mastercard, American Express, Visa, and JCB cards issued internationally, provided they are enabled for contactless payment. Domestically issued Mastercard and American Express cards supporting contactless payment and RMB transactions will also be accepted. Passengers can tap their cards on the designated logo area of the metro gates to access the system.
This expansion builds upon the Guangzhou Metro’s existing support for China’s unionpay network, now encompassing all five major global card networks: UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB, and American Express.
The Guangzhou Metro is also upgrading payment systems in its convenience stores to support all five card networks, wiht full implementation expected by the end of October. This initiative aims to provide a unified and streamlined payment experience for both commuters and visitors.
