new Snailfish โคSpecies Discovered in Deep Pacific, Highlighting Ocean’s Mysteries
MONTEREY โขBAY, โขCA – September 9, 2025 – โฃIn a testament to the โvast unknowns of the โขdeep sea, researchersโฃ have announced theโฃ finding ofโ three newโค species โฃof snailfish inhabitingโ the waters off the coastโ of Central California. The findings, published this week, underscore how much โคremains to โbe learned about life โคon Earth, โขeven โinโ areas โคpreviously explored.
The snailfish, belonging to theโ family Liparidae, โare typically small, tadpole-shaped creatures with large, โฃjelly-like heads. Approximately 400 species โฃare currently โคknown,โข and they possess โa unique disk โฃon their โคbelly allowing them to adhereโ to the seafloor โขor โ”hitchhike on largerโ animals,” โaccording โtoโ theโฃ Monterey Bay Aquariumโ Research Institute (MBARI). โ
“Our discovery of not โคone, but three, newโ species of snailfishes โis a reminder โof how much we have yet to โlearn about lifeโข on Earth and โคofโ the power of curiosity and exploration,” โsaid Mackenzie Gerringer, study lead authorโค and a marine scientist at SUNY โขGeneseo, in a statement released by MBARI.
The three โnew species wereโฃ initially observed during two โฃexpeditionsโข in 2019 utilizing MBARI’s underwater robot explorer. Theโข “bumpy snailfish” (Careproctusโ colliculi) wasโฃ found swimming at a โdepth of 10,722 feet โ(3,268 โmeters), while the “dark snailfish” (Careproctus yanceyi) wasโฃ observed even โdeeper, at approximately 13,451 feet (4,100 meters). A third, the “sleek snailfish” โ(Paraliparis in), also inhabits these depths.
Scientists โขwere โable to carefully retrieve one โขspecimen of each speciesโข for laboratory analysis, where CT scans were conducted toโ study their physical characteristics. The bumpy snailfishโค is described as pink and round with โa bumpy exterior. The dark snailfish is fully blackโฃ with a round head and horizontal mouth. The sleek snailfish โขdiffers withโฃ its โขlong,”laterally compressed body” and angled jaw.
“They come โin beautiful colors,” noted Johanna Weston, anโข ecologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution whoโค was not involved in the study, in โขan interview with theโ Newโ Yorkโข Times. “They also have a lovely little โฃsmile on their face.”
Currently, researchers believe the bumpy snailfish may beโฃ the rarest โof the three, asโ this discovery represents the only confirmed observation of โthe species to date. Further expeditionsโฃ are planned to determine the geographic distribution and population โขsizes of all three new โคspecies. Snailfish are known for adapting to diverse environments; shallow-water species curl againstโ rocks or seaweed, while some deep-sea โคvarieties, like oneโฃ currently holding theโ record, are the deepest-dwelling fish known to science.
