Skywatchers โคare in for a treat tonight! This Wednesday marksโ the second and โfinal “supermoon” of the year,following a stunning showing onโ October 7th. Look to the night sky to witness a full moon appearing larger and brighter than usual.
While the term “supermoon” isn’t an โofficial scientific designation,according toโค the national Observatory,it’s become a popular way to describe a full โmoon occurring nearโ itsโค closest point to โEarth – a point known asโ perigee. Specifically, it refers to a โfull moon within 90% of perigee.
Tonight, the โmoon will be approximately 356,980 kilometers (221,803 miles) from our planet.
“you don’tโข need any equipment, just look atโฃ the sky,” advises Josina Oliveiraโ do โคNascimento, manager of the Communication โandโ Popularization Division of Science at the National Observatory. For the best viewing experience, she recommendsโ finding a location away from artificial light sources. โOf course, clear skies are essential!
Why Doesโข it Appear Bigger?
The โmoon may seem even larger when it’s near the horizon, an optical illusion โฃthat adds toโฃ the spectacle.
when โto Look:
The optimal time to observe the supermoon isโค within one hour after sunset or โคone โฃhour before sunrise,when the moon is low on the horizon and unobstructed by โฃatmospheric phenomena.โ Sunset times โคvaryโข by location:
* Sรฃo Paulo, โBrazil: 6:23 PM (Brasรญlia time)
* Recife, Brazil: 5:15 PM โ(Brasรญlia time)
* Porto Alegre, Brazil: 6:49 PM โข(Brasรญlia time)
Mark your calendars! The next supermoon isn’t expected until December โ4th, when the moon willโ beโ 357,219 kilometers (221,959 miles) from Earth. Don’t miss tonight’s celestial displayโ – a simple look upwards is all it takes!
