How ‘Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ became an unlikely hit

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 9, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Gordon ⁤Lightfoot‘s ‘Wreck ⁤of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ unexpectedly sailed to the top of⁤ the charts in 1976, becoming an enduring⁤ musical memorial to the lost ship and its 29 crew members. The song’s success was remarkable, not ⁣just for its length and somber subject matter, but because ⁣it defied typical ⁤radio programming and resonated deeply with a public grappling with the tragedy. What began as a journalistic endeavor to understand the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald transformed into a cultural touchstone, forever linking Lightfoot’s name to the Great ⁤Lakes disaster.

The ballad’s journey to becoming ‌an unlikely hit began in november 1975, when the⁣ freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a Lake⁣ Superior storm. Lightfoot, already ‌an established folk artist, was captivated by news reports and felt compelled⁣ to write about the event. He ‌meticulously researched the sinking, drawing from news articles, Coast Guard reports, and interviews. “I didn’t set out to write a hit record,” Lightfoot once said.⁣ “I set out to tell a story.”

Initially⁢ released in late 1976, the nearly six-and-a-half-minute song was⁤ considered too long for ‍many radio stations. However, listeners began requesting it, driven by a shared sense of grief and a desire to‍ understand the tragedy. ⁤The song climbed‍ the charts, eventually reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in february 1976, becoming⁤ Lightfoot’s only Top 10 hit in the United States.

The song’s impact extended beyond the airwaves. It became a staple at memorial services for the Fitzgerald, particularly at Mariners’ Church in Detroit, where annual Great Lakes Memorial⁤ Services ⁤where held. ⁤Lightfoot ‍himself became a frequent, quiet visitor to the church, even ‍altering a lyric ⁣from “a musty old hall in Detroit” to “a rustic old hall” after a visit. One year, ‍he ‍unexpectedly joined the choir in performing the song, singing from ‌the same spot where⁤ rev.⁣ Ingalls had knelt to pray after the shipwreck.

“There was a murmur, then you could hear a‍ pin drop,” Ingalls recalled of Lightfoot’s performance. “Peopel were basically holding their breath while he sang.”

lightfoot’s death on May ‌1, ⁣2023, prompted the Mariners’ Church to ring its bells 30‍ times ⁣- 29 for the crew ⁣and one for the singer himself. He had previously told the son of Rev. Ingalls, “Your dad meant a lot to me. ‌he was a ⁤very kind, thoughtful man,” adding, “He treated every day as a gift, which we all should do.”

Bucks County Voter Data: Strange Third-Party Choices & Pipeline Concerns

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 8, 2025

Bucks County Officials⁢ Demand answers as Sunoco Repairs Pipeline Following Jet Fuel Leak

UPPER‍ MAKEFIELD, PA – November 8, 2025 – Following the finding of a ‌jet fuel leak earlier this year, Sunoco⁣ and Energy ‌Transfer are digging new⁣ holes to repair the Twin Oaks pipeline‍ in Bucks County, prompting‌ renewed calls for ‍accountability from local and ⁢federal officials. The pipeline runs near the Mount Eyre neighborhood in Upper Makefield Township.

The latest⁣ work comes after pipeline inspection ⁢tools identified “anomalies”⁤ near the site of the January leak, which originated from a crack in ‌a repair made in the 1990s.‌ While company representatives maintain there is no⁤ immediate threat to public ⁣safety, U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick⁣ (R-Pennsylvania) and state sen. ⁢Steve Santarsiero (D-Bucks) are pressing for greater oversight.

“I spoke with Paul ⁢roberti, administrator of the federal Pipeline and hazardous Materials Safety ⁢Administration (PHMSA),” Santarsiero wrote on ⁣social media. “I underscored that ‌Sunoco/Energy Transfer has not been a good actor in⁣ dealing with the scores of households in the Mt.Eyre neighborhood area … PHMSA should not take ⁢them at their word.”

Fitzpatrick echoed⁤ those ⁢concerns, stating via social media: “We expect a full accounting, and the long-overdue answers our community deserves, by year’s end.”

The Twin Oaks pipeline is⁢ decades old, but company representatives ⁢have previously argued its⁢ lifespan is indefinite due to ongoing‍ repair capabilities. ⁤

Sunoco representatives anticipate completing cleanup of the ‌dig site on Taylorsville Road by November 14.Residents can find updates at https://uppermakefield.incidentupdates.com/updates/.

The initial leak prompted testing of Washington Crossing wells, as reported ‌by the⁤ PhillyBurbs https://www.phillyburbs.com/story/news/local/2025/02/05/washington-crossing-wells-to-test-after-jet-fuel-pipeline-leak-sunoco-bucks-county-upper-makefield/78224506007/.

Miller Family Foundation Donates $100,000 to ⁤Salt ‌Lake City Flood Relief

SALT LAKE CITY – The Larry H. & Gail⁢ Miller Family‌ Foundation announced a $100,000 donation Thursday⁤ to ⁢the Westside Flood Relief Fund, providing a critically important boost to recovery efforts ‌following devastating flooding in early October.⁤ The contribution comes as residents continue to grapple wiht ‍damage from record rainfall that impacted dozens of homes in the Westpointe neighborhood.

The flooding occurred after 2.61 inches of⁣ rain fell in ⁣14 hours between Oct. 3 ⁤and Oct. 4, marking the second-wettest day in Salt Lake City‘s history since 1874, according to ⁢the National Whether service. ⁢A drainage canal⁤ overflowed ⁢near the Willow Place community, leaving some homes with over ⁤a foot of water⁤ in their⁣ basements.

“Our⁢ hearts go out to the families and⁣ neighborhoods impacted by this destructive flooding,” said ⁤Don Stirling, executive director of the Miller Family ⁢Foundation, in a statement. “The west side is an essential part of our community, and we’re grateful for the partnerships and efforts to help residents recover and rebuild.”

The ⁣Westside Coalition launched the⁤ Westside Flood Relief Fund on Oct. 7,after Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall declared a state of emergency. The ⁤fund initially aimed ⁣to raise $100,000 ⁤but had collected just over⁣ $6,500 before ‍Thursday’s declaration.

Larry H. Miller Real Estate is‍ also‍ contributing up ⁢to $25,000 in donated⁣ materials for home repairs. All funding is currently being distributed, the foundation stated. Many affected residents are blue-collar workers or retirees who reportedly faced denials of flood insurance claims, according to Salt Lake City Councilwoman Victoria Petro.

“Funds like these allow us to provide immediate relief, help residents repair⁢ their homes and fortify our west ⁣side neighborhoods,” said Dan Strong, president of the Westside⁣ Coalition.
