French Social Security Budget Debate โPaused,โ Pension โReform to be Discussed Wednesday
PARIS – debates surrounding France’s Social โSecurity budgetโค were suspended in โคthe National Assembly Friday, with lawmakers set to turn their โattention to pension reform on Wednesday, November 13th. The move comesโ after disagreements over extending debate hours โขto fully address remaining amendments.
During Friday’s session, amendments proposed by โ Sandrine Runel (Socialists)โข led deputiesโฃ to modify the government’s initial proposal regarding post-maternity leaveโ medical examinations, reinstating their โขobligatory nature and setting โขaโ potential duration of one monthโ – renewable in two-month increments – for leave taken either in the city โor hospital. Danielle Simonnet (Ecologists and social) had previously voiced indignation โregarding aspects of the government’s plan concerning doctors.
Requests from โ Mathilde โคPanot โฃ (La France insoumise)โ andโ Cyrielle Chatelain (Ecologiste et โsocial) to extend debates past midnight were rejected by a majority of deputies. Panot subsequentlyโ criticized the outcome, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that a “grand coalition” was allowing the government โto send the text toโค the โSenate “at its convenience without any final vote by the Assembly.”
A heated exchange occurred between Manuel Bompard (LFI) and Jรฉrรดmeโ Guedj (PS) regarding procedural โtactics, โwith Bompard calling for deputies to withdraw half of theirโ remaining amendmentsโข for โคWednesday and Guedj pointingโข to a previous vote against the “recipes” portion of the budget as a delaying tactic.
The differingโข viewpoints between LFI and the PS are expected to resurfaceโ during Wednesday’s debate on โthe suspensionโฃ of โpension reform, which LFI views as insufficient, while the PS had previously made it a condition for โnot promptly censoringโข the government.
the Assembly will resume โexamination of the state finance billโค for 2026 on Thursday, November 14th, following the pension reform debate. The timetable for these discussions is โexpected to be tight due โto constitutional โdeadlines.
