Coach’s Reaction
Tennessee coach Karen Weekly expressed her disappointment but emphasized the need to move forward. Obviously that was a gut-punch,
Weekly saeid. I thought our team played really, really well. Proud of how we came out. We don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves. We got to be ready to play tomorrow, and that’s what we just talked about in the locker room.
Looking Ahead
Tennessee (45-16) now faces an elimination game against No. 3 seed Florida (48-16) on May 30 at 7 p.m. ET,which will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Lady Vols must regroup quickly to keep their WCWS hopes alive.
Pickens’ Performance
Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens delivered a stellar performance, holding Oklahoma to five hits. she recorded four walks and eight strikeouts. Notably, it was only the third time this season that Oklahoma had struck out eight or more times in a game.
karlyn is as steady as they come,
Weekly said. She’s the ultimate warrior – 99 times out of 100,she wins that game.
Offensive Efforts and Defensive Challenges
Tennessee’s offense showed promise, managing to hit off Oklahoma pitcher Sam Landry. Though, Oklahoma’s defense proved to be a significant obstacle, stifling Tennessee’s momentum.
The Sooners executed double plays in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. They also made a crucial play in the sixth with two Tennessee runners on base. These defensive plays prevented Tennessee from adding insurance runs, ultimately impacting the game’s outcome.
You’re not trying to hit into a double play. Sometimes those things happen,
Weekly said. It’s a tough game, and hitting’s the hardest thing to do.
Pro Tip
In high-pressure situations, focusing on the fundamentals can definitely help players avoid errors. Maintaining composure and sticking to the game plan are crucial for success.
Resilience and Experience
The Lady Vols have demonstrated resilience in the past. They overcame a series-opening loss against Nebraska in the super regionals, winning two consecutive elimination games to secure their spot in the WCWS.
I don’t think much changes, if we’re being honest,
said senior shortstop Laura Mealer. We’ve been in this position before, just losing a game and having to bounce back. the only difference is just being in postseason. We had a great talk in the locker room of just, yeah, it stings right now, and we can let it sting for a minute. But flush it right away, as you don’t have time to dwell on it.
Youthful Talent
Tennessee can draw confidence from their performance, especially considering the team’s youth.McKenna Gibson is the only senior in the starting lineup with four years of SEC experience. The team features three freshmen and two sophomores, who contributed substantially in their first WCWS game. Redshirt freshman Ella dodge drew two walks, with the first leading to tennessee’s third run.
I’m really proud how they showed up here. they weren’t fazed,
Weekly said. The environment didn’t faze them. They knew – I don’t know how many people this place holds, 10,000 – that there were going to be 9,900 against them. That didn’t bother them at all. So there’s a lot of things to really be excited about and proud of.
