Windows 11 Gains Direct Copilot Access & New Audio Sharing Feature
Microsoft is enhancing Windows 11 with a notable update currently available to Windows insider Programme testers in the Dev and Beta Channels (Build 26220.7051). The core of this update is deeper integration of the AI assistant, Copilot, and a new audio sharing capability.
the most notable change is the introduction of “Ask Copilot in Taskbar,” which allows users to replace the traditional Windows search bar with direct access to the Copilot AI assistant. This feature is enabled through Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, transforming the search field into an AI command center. Copilot leverages both vision and language processing for natural interaction with the operating system.
this integration combines AI chat functionality with conventional file and app search, providing real-time results as the user types. Microsoft emphasizes that data privacy is maintained,and Copilot will not automatically access personal content.
Alongside the Copilot integration, Microsoft is also introducing “Shared Audio,” a feature exclusive to copilot+ PCs. utilizing Bluetooth LE audio technology, Shared Audio allows a single device to transmit sound to two seperate Bluetooth devices together. This enables scenarios like shared movie viewing or collaborative music listening without the need for physical splitters.
The Shared Audio feature is currently limited to select Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models,with wider availability planned as more manufacturers release compatible drivers. Activation is simple: users select “Shared audio (preview)” in Quick Settings, choose two Bluetooth devices, and click “Share.”
Microsoft is implementing “Ask Copilot” as an opt-in feature, allowing users to adopt the AI integration at their own pace. The company anticipates a full public release of these features in 2026, allowing time for refinement based on user feedback. These updates signal Microsoft’s commitment to integrating AI deeply into the Windows desktop experience and differentiating Copilot+ PCs with exclusive functionalities.
