September 27, 1986 The so-called “Balloon Crash” happened in Cleveland (USA). An attempt to set a record and raise money for a good cause during the annual festival ended in environmental damage, several lawsuits, and, according to some allegations, even resulted in the death of two people.

It all started with the idea of ​​the United Way, a well-known international network of non-profit organizations in the United States, to organize an original publicity stunt to raise money. At a traditional festival in Cleveland (Ohio), they decided to break the world record by releasing 1.5 million balloons into the sky at the same time. The previous record was set a year earlier at Disneyland’s 30th anniversary – and everything happened there without any problems.

Balloonfest’86 was coordinated by the Los Angeles-based company Balloonart by Treb, led by Treb Haining, who spent six months preparing for the event. A rectangular structure the size of a city block was built to house the balloons in the southwest quarter of Cleveland’s Public Square. It was 250 by 150 feet (76 by 46 m) and was three stories high. As a result: the water and shores of the lake were polluted; accidents started on the roads because the “water ball” distracted drivers and they couldn’t see where they were going; the local airport had to close the runway to clean it up. The worst outcome (although there is doubt) was the death of two fishermen on Lake Erie. Rescuers who were supposed to be looking for the missing men the day before said the balloons made searches difficult, both from the air (for a helicopter) and from the water, making it difficult to see who was in the lake. On September 29, the bodies of the dead fishermen were washed ashore. However, in an interview in 2024, the Coast Guard Search and Rescue program manager, Roger Rice, said that the “Balloon Crash” was not the cause of the fishermen’s deaths. But in 1986, “hot on the heels,” the wife of one of the victims filed a lawsuit against the United Way and the company that organized the launch of the balloons. The woman asked for $3.2 million in damages. The terms finally agreed upon have not been disclosed. It is also unknown how much the other plaintiff, an Arabian horse owner from Ohio, ultimately received. He said the fall of the balls into the pasture scared the animals and they suffered “irreversible injuries”. He asked for compensation of 100 thousand dollars.
