Justin Lin to Direct ‘Helldivers‘ Movie for Sony, PlayStation Productions
HOLLYWOOD, CA – May 16, 2024 – Justin Lin, best known for revitalizing the Fast & Furious franchise and his work on Star Trek Beyond, is set to direct a feature film adaptation of the popular video game Helldivers for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The project aims to bring the cooperative, sci-fi action of the game to the big screen.
The Helldivers movie represents a continued push by Sony and PlayStation Productions into adapting successful video game properties for film and television. This collaboration builds on the success of Uncharted, which grossed $407 million globally, and ongoing projects like Peacock’s twisted Metal and HBO’s The last of Us. Lin’s involvement signals a commitment to high-profile adaptations within the growing video game adaptation sphere.
Insiders report Lin, who is not a gamer, pitched his take on Helldivers by focusing on the potential for human stories within the game’s chaotic world and weaving in relevant themes. the source material,set on the planet Super Earth,features players battling alien Bugs,Automatons,and cyborgs,with recent game updates introducing genetically engineered,reanimated Bug corpses and spreading spores – elements poised to translate into a visually dynamic and action-packed film.
Lin currently has multiple projects in growth, including the manga adaptation One-Punch Man and Brzrkr, based on the Keanu reeves-created comic for Netflix. He has stepped away from the Amazon MGM crime thriller Stakehorse. His directing credits include The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and F9: The Fast Saga, which collectively earned $2.66 billion worldwide. He recently directed the indie drama Last Days,which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
