Palestinian Journalist Salih Jafaravi Killed in Gaza, Account Deleted After Death
Gaza City – Palestinian journalist Salih Jafaravi was fatally shot with seven bullets by Israeli gang members while reporting in the sabra District of Gaza, according to reports circulating on social media. His belongings were reportedly stolen following the attack. Images showing Jafaravi’s body, clad in a press vest, being transported to al-Ehli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City have been widely shared.
Jafaravi, who had been documenting Israel‘s military operations in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and exposing alleged war crimes, had reportedly been placed on Israel’s “red list” due to his reporting. He was recently seen attempting to inform residents of Gaza about a recently achieved ceasefire, shouting, “The war is over, a ceasefire has been reached,” as he moved through the streets.
The circumstances surrounding Jafaravi’s death have sparked outrage, especially after Meta, the parent company of Instagram, deleted his account shortly after news of his death emerged. This action follows accusations of censorship of pro-Palestinian content and a perceived bias in favor of Israel’s narrative regarding the conflict.
Jafaravi’s death brings the total number of journalists killed in gaza since October 7, 2023, to over 250, according to reported figures. The Committee to Protect Journalists and other press freedom organizations have documented a pattern of attacks targeting journalists covering the conflict.
