Widow Files Suit Alleging Talc-Based Powder Linked to Ovarianโค Cancer Death
A man is pursuing โlegal actionโข against Johnson & Johnson, alleging that the โฃcompany’sโ talc-based babyโข powder contributed toโ the ovarianโข cancer that claimed his wife’sโค life. Eva, 63, diedโ in โaugust 2023 โฃafter a battle with โthe disease. She had neverโ smoked or consumed alcohol.
Mark, Eva’s husband, stated, “This legalโข action won’t bring โEva back, but thisโค company needs to be held โขto account.” โฃHe explained that Eva had used talc powder for decades, โbelieving โit to be a safe and harmless product.
Eva initially received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer and underwent chemotherapy. However, subsequent blood tests revealed rising levels of CA125, a proteinโค associated โwith the disease, and โคher health rapidly deteriorated.
The lawsuit is part of a larger group of claims alleging that โJohnsonโ & Johnson ‘suppressed data that might indicate that baby powder was contaminated โwith asbestos’ and ‘lobbied regulators’โค to maintain โsales of the product.
Experts offer differing perspectives โon the linkโค between talcโ and ovarian cancer.Justin Stebbing,an oncologist and professor โขat Anglia Ruskin University, believes a strong connection exists, citing a 2023 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology involving 50,884 women that found a positive correlation โขbetween โคovarian cancer and genital talcโ use. “To me that study was the most compelling evidence,” Professor Stebbingโค saeid. “It’s very clear that there is aโข specific risk and the mechanism is clear.”
However, Paul Pharoah, a research scientist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, cautions that โwhile a connection is evident – women who used talc in the โgenital region have a higher risk ofโข epithelial ovarian cancer -โข causation hasn’t been proven.”Correlation is not causation,” he stated, adding that other factors could be โฃinvolved.
Despite the ongoing โฃdebate, Mark remains convinced that talc causedโข his wife’s โcancer. “She shouldn’t have died,” he said. “It had no businessโค allowing people like my wife to innocently and frequentlyโ use talc – and, this is what’s so awful, in โขthe belief โขit wasโฃ something mild โand harmless.”
