Jackson County, GA – โคA โtruck โคdriver has been โขcharged with multiple counts โฃof vehicular homicide following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 in Jackson County Monday that left eight people dead and multiple others injured. The โขcrash,involving multiple tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles,occurred near mile marker 136 and resultedโ in aโ massiveโ fire,shutting down the highway for hours.
The Georgia State Patrol identified the driver โฃas Hammock, whoโฃ faces โขcharges related โto the deaths and injuries caused by the collision. The investigation โคis ongoing, andโ additional charges are possible. the incident has brought renewedโค attention โto highwayโ safetyโฃ andโฃ the risks associated with โขcommercial trucking.
Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelter confirmed one of its transport vansโ wasโข involved in the crash. The โvan was carrying 37 โcats to a โคpartnerโข shelterโค in Vermontโ when itโ was struck approximately 90 โminutes after departing Atlanta. The organization reportedโฃ its driver and several โanimals were injured, withโข five โคcats initially missing. As of Tuesday afternoon,โ all but twoโข kittens โคwere accounted โfor.โค
“We are devastated for the families โขaffected, and our thoughts โand deepest โsympathies areโ with them,” Furkids said in aโ statement โฃposted โขto its officialโ Facebook page. โฃStaff members โขwere on scene working โto recoverโค the animals and โprovide medical care to the 32 cats that have โbeen found.
The georgia Stateโฃ Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team isโค continuing โto investigate the โcause of the crash.
