Anthropic Taps Microsoft India Veteran to Lead Expansion into Key AI Battleground

Anthropic has appointed Irina Ghose, a former Microsoft India managing director, to lead its India business as the U.S. AI startup prepares to open an office in Bengaluru. This move underscores India’s growing importance as a key market for AI companies seeking expansion beyond the U.S.

Ghose brings 24 years of big-tech operating experience from her time at Microsoft, equipping Anthropic with a seasoned executive possessing valuable local enterprise and government relationships as it establishes a presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.

India is already Anthropic’s second-largest user base for Claude, with usage heavily focused on technical and work-related applications like software progress. Arch-rival OpenAI is also intensifying its focus on the market with plans to open an office in New Delhi, signaling that India is rapidly becoming a fiercely contested arena in the global race to commercialize generative AI.

While India boasts enormous scale – over a billion internet subscribers and 700 million smartphone users – converting this reach into revenue has proven challenging, prompting AI companies to experiment with aggressive pricing and promotions.OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go, an under-$5 plan, and later offered it free for a year to attract Indian users.

Similar trends are emerging for Anthropic: Claude app downloads in India increased 48% year-over-year to approximately 767,000 in September, with consumer spending surging 572% to $195,000 – still modest compared to the $2.5 million spent in the U.S.during the same period.

Anthropic has been actively engaging with India at a high level, with CEO Dario Amodei meeting with corporate executives, lawmakers, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October to discuss expansion plans and growing adoption. The company previously explored a partnership with Reliance Industries, though Reliance ultimately partnered with Google to offer its Gemini AI Pro plan free to Jio subscribers. Bharti Airtel similarly partnered with Perplexity to bundle access to its premium subscription, highlighting the critical role of Indian telecom giants in distributing consumer AI services.

in a LinkedIn post, ghose stated her focus will be on working with Indian enterprises, developers, and startups adopting Claude for “mission-critical” use cases, emphasizing demand for “high-trust, enterprise-grade AI.” She also noted the potential of AI tailored to local languages as a “force multiplier” across sectors like education and healthcare, signaling Anthropic’s intent to expand adoption beyond early tech adopters.

The push by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity coincides with a relatively early-stage homegrown GenAI ecosystem in India. While the country has a strong software talent pool and a growing user base, it has produced few startups building large foundation models, with investors primarily backing submission-layer companies.

This appointment also precedes India’s AI Impact Summit 2026, where the government is expected to convene AI startups, global CEOs, and industry experts to discuss the next phase of AI deployment and position india as a key player in the global AI landscape.

Anthropic is actively building its India team, with job listings for roles focused on startup and enterprise account management and partner sales, signaling a commitment to deepening its go-to-market efforts and tapping into Indian businesses and startups as customers.
