The synthetic lichen developed by Dr. Jin’s team pairs filamentous fungi with cyanobacteria, creating a self-sufficient system that doesn’t require external nutrients [[3]], [[1]], [[2]].

“We can build a synthetic community by mimicking natural lichens. We’ve developed a way to build synthetic lichens to create biomaterials that glue Martian regolith particles into structures.then, through 3D printing, a wide range of structures can be fabricated, such as buildings, houses and furniture,” explained Dr. Jin.

The cyanobacteria fix nitrogen and carbon, supporting the growth of the fungi, while the fungi promote calcium carbonate precipitation, binding the Martian regolith (soil) into solid building blocks [[2]]. This biomineralization process offers a lasting and fully autonomous construction solution.

A new chapter in oceanographic exploration began this month with the launch of China’s first domestically designed and built deep-ocean drilling vessel, the “Meng Xiang.” This ambitious project promises to redefine our understanding of the planet’s interior and unlock potential energy resources.

Reaching Unprecedented Depths

The “Meng Xiang” is capable of drilling down an astonishing 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) beneath the ocean floor. This capability represents a significant leap forward, allowing scientists to investigate regions previously inaccessible to direct study. The vessel was officially commissioned in Guangzhou on November 17, 2024, and will begin operations in the South China Sea, with a planned research timeline extending to 2035.

For decades, scientific exploration has been largely limited to Earth’s crust, averaging around 9.3 miles in thickness, though varying considerably between oceanic and continental regions. The Quest for the Moho

Described as “China’s largest scientific research vessel,” the “Meng Xiang” measures approximately 180 meters (560 ft) in length and 33 meters (108 ft) in width, displacing 42,600 tonnes. It boasts a range of 15,000 nautical miles (27,780 km), can operate independently for 120 days, and provides accommodations for 180 personnel.

Unique Capabilities

Notably, this vessel is the first globally to integrate deep-ocean scientific drilling with the potential for oil and gas exploration and natural gas hydrate research. The “Meng Xiang” is equipped with a unique hydraulic lifting rig designed for both scientific core sampling and resource exploration.

The vessel’s drilling system can deploy a 907-tonne drill pipe to depths of approximately 11,000 meters (36,000 feet) below the ocean surface, as reported by New Atlas. It supports four distinct drilling modes and three coring methods, adapting to diverse geological conditions and research goals.

Advanced Laboratories and Safety Features

The “Meng Xiang” houses nine advanced laboratories dedicated to fields such as geology, geochemistry, microbiology, ocean science, and drilling technology. It also features what is described as “the world’s first automated shipborne core sample storage system,” enabling immediate analysis of retrieved samples and direct investigation of the Moho’s properties.
