Seoul, South Korea – Dozens of South Koreans ‌repatriated ⁤from Cambodia on Saturday are expected to face police⁣ investigations as ⁤authorities probe their alleged involvement in online scam operations. The return of 64‍ South Koreans, arriving at Incheon⁣ International Airport after ⁣a chartered flight from Phnom Penh, follows a recent surge in concern over citizens ⁢trafficked into adn working within illicit cybercrime networks in Cambodia.

The repatriations come after the death of a South ⁣Korean student in Cambodia, reportedly due to being forced to work in a scam center, sparked‍ public outcry and prompted a⁣ diplomatic response from Seoul.A South Korean government delegation traveled ⁣to Phnom Penh for discussions on collaborative efforts to address the issue.

Cambodian authorities detained most of the returnees during crackdowns on scam centers.‍ South Korean⁢ National Security Director Wi sung-lac stated that ⁢investigations will focus on determining whether the individuals willingly joined thes organizations or were coerced through deceptive job advertisements.

South Korean officials estimate approximately 1,000 of its citizens are currently⁣ working in Cambodian scam⁤ centers, which collectively⁤ employ ‌an estimated 200,000 workers. These ⁢centers have proliferated since the COVID-19 pandemic, exploiting individuals as scammers while defrauding victims⁢ through bogus ⁤investment schemes, illegal gambling operations, and romance scams. Monitoring groups estimate these scams generate billions⁣ of dollars annually for international criminal gangs.

In response to the crisis, South ⁤Korea implemented a travel ban Thursday for certain areas of ‍Cambodia, including Bokor Mountain in Kampot province,‍ where⁣ the student’s body was discovered. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has as requested a‍ review of these restrictions. President Lee Jae Myung has also directed authorities to urgently address and remove illegal job ⁢advertisements ⁤throughout Southeast Asia.

Interpol reported in June that ⁢the scope of these scam‍ operations has⁤ expanded beyond ⁣Southeast‌ Asia, with victims now originating from⁣ South America, Western Europe,⁢ Eastern Africa, and‌ new centers emerging in the Middle East, ‌West Africa, and Central america.

Title: Psyche Asteroid: A Gold Nugget Worth $165 Trillion

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 9, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

The Allure ‌and Obstacles of asteroid Mining

Table of Contents

  • The Allure ‌and Obstacles of asteroid Mining
    • A Lost planet’s Core
    • Technically Feasible, Financially Challenged
    • The Rise⁢ of Private Space ‌Mining
    • Asteroids vs. the Moon

Despite‍ ongoing technological advancements and increasing interest from the private sector, extracting ‍resources from asteroids remains‍ a notable challenge. One celestial body capturing ⁤attention is 16 Psyche, a unique asteroid possibly ‌worth a⁢ staggering Rp165,000 septillion⁣ (a number with 24 zeros!).

A Lost planet’s Core

Measuring over 226 kilometers in diameter, 16 Psyche is believed to be the exposed core of a protoplanet that never fully formed. Unlike the rocky composition of most asteroids, Psyche is thought to be rich⁤ in iron, nickel, and valuable rare metals like ‍platinum and palladium – crucial components in modern electronics and⁢ the automotive industry.

though, NASA’s upcoming mission to Psyche isn’t‌ driven by mining ambitions. The primary goal is to‍ unlock the secrets of planetary formation by studying the metallic core of an ancient world, offering an unprecedented glimpse⁣ into the interiors of planets.

Technically Feasible, Financially Challenged

Planetary physicist Philip ‌Metzger of Central Florida University argues that the technical hurdles to asteroid mining ⁢aren’t insurmountable. The key ⁢difference from terrestrial mining‍ lies‌ in ⁢developing equipment capable⁣ of functioning in low gravity and withstanding high radiation levels. Crucially, the necessary ⁤robotic technology‍ and space equipment have already‌ been developed ⁢and tested ‍in laboratory settings.

However, according⁣ to NASA’s Technology Readiness Level (TRL) system, asteroid mining technology currently sits at levels 3 to 5. Reaching ⁢mission readiness ‍requires levels 6 or⁣ 7, signifying triumphant ‍testing in real space conditions. “The technology ⁣needs⁤ to be‍ improved…before we are ready to build a flight mission. What is lacking right now is funding,” Metzger explains.

The Rise⁢ of Private Space ‌Mining

While public space agencies prioritize research,a growing number of private companies, including AstroForge and TransAstra, are actively pursuing⁢ asteroid mining technologies. They face substantial obstacles related to cost and logistical ‍complexity.

Kevin Cannon, an assistant professor ‍at the Colorado School of Mines, questions the economic viability of returning mined materials to Earth. He deems the concept “economically dubious” due to the high‍ mission ⁣costs and the ⁤fluctuating value of ⁢metals, notably platinum group metals.

instead, the most promising avenue appears to be in-situ resource utilization – directly exploiting asteroid resources in space. Water-rich asteroids can be processed into rocket⁤ fuel (hydrogen and oxygen),‌ while metals can be used to construct satellites and space infrastructure, ‌eliminating the⁣ need for costly Earth-based launches.

Asteroids vs. the Moon

Although the Moon is closer and possesses valuable resources, its metal content is⁢ significantly lower than that of metallic asteroids like Psyche. While lunar mining might be easier,⁣ its unlikely to yield the same abundance‍ of resources.

Asteroids present thier ‍own challenges.⁣ Even “near⁤ Earth” asteroids require ⁤carefully timed orbital windows for safe return missions. NASA’s Psyche probe, for example,is expected to arrive at its‌ destination in 2029 after a six-year journey.

Currently, ⁢several space missions – including OSIRIS-REx, Hayabusa2, and ⁣Hera ⁢- ⁣are laying the‍ groundwork for future mining ‍operations.while not focused on direct metal extraction, these projects are developing essential technologies in‌ navigation, sampling, and data return, all critical for‌ successful asteroid mining endeavors.

Moldova‘s⁢ Ruling ⁢Party Secures Victory in Parliamentary Election⁣ Amidst Russian Interference Allegations

CHIȘINĂU, Moldova – Moldova’s pro-European ⁤People’s Action and Solidarity (PAS) ‌party won a parliamentary election‍ Sunday, securing a clear path toward continued EU integration, according to results released Monday. The victory comes ‌as the country alleges a concerted effort‌ by russia to destabilize the election through disinformation, cyberattacks, and attempts to‌ incite unrest.

Alleged⁣ Russian⁢ schemes included⁣ orchestrating a large-scale vote-buying scheme, conducting more than⁣ 1,000 cyberattacks on critical ‌government infrastructure‍ so far this year, a plan to incite ‌riots around Sunday’s election, and a sprawling disinformation campaign online.

Election day ‍was marked by incidents including ‍bomb threats at multiple polling stations abroad, cyberattacks on electoral and government infrastructure, voters photographing their ballots, and reports of illegal transportation of voters to polling stations. Three individuals were⁢ detained on suspicion of plotting to cause unrest following the vote.

Igor Dodon, a former president and member of the pro-russian Patriotic Electoral ‍Bloc, alleged, without providing evidence, that the ruling PAS party meddled with the vote and called for‍ a protest in front of the Parliament building on Monday.Police warned that‌ individuals had been “promised money” to ‌attend the protest and cautioned against participation, stating organizers bear⁤ “absolute responsibility” ‍for any illegal actions.

PAS campaigned on⁢ a platform of accelerating Moldova’s path to EU membership, aiming to sign an accession treaty with the 27-nation bloc‍ by 2028, alongside pledges to double incomes, modernize infrastructure, and combat corruption.

Cristian Cantir, an associate professor of international relations at Oakland University, described the PAS‌ victory as “a clear win for pro-European forces in Moldova,” enabling continuity in pursuing EU integration. He added that “Moldova will continue to be in a ‌tough geopolitical habitat characterized by Russia’s attempts to pull it back into its‌ sphere of influence.”

Approximately 1.6⁤ million people, representing 52.1% of eligible voters, cast ballots, including 280,000⁤ votes from polling stations abroad, according to the Central Electoral Commission.
