Creator Economy: Beyond Ads – MrBeast & Diversification Strategies | Equity Podcast

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 21, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

MrBeast’s company, Beast Industries, has acquired Step, a Gen Z-focused fintech app, the companies announced Monday. The acquisition signals a broader shift in how online creators are building businesses, moving beyond ad revenue and into direct ownership of financial service platforms.

Step, which has over 7 million users, offers financial services geared toward young people, including tools to build credit, save money, and invest. The company previously raised half a billion dollars in funding and attracted investments from celebrities like Charli D’Amelio, Will Smith, The Chainsmokers, and Stephen Curry, as well as venture firms including General Catalyst, Coatue, and Stripe.

“Nobody taught me about investing, building credit, or managing money when I was growing up,” said Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast, in a statement released on X, formerly Twitter. “I want to give millions of young people the financial foundation I never had.”

The move comes as creators increasingly seek to diversify their revenue streams. According to a recent report discussed on the TechCrunch Equity podcast, MrBeast’s chocolate business is now outperforming his media arm, demonstrating a willingness to expand beyond content creation. This acquisition, and others like it, represent a new playbook for creators looking to build sustainable business empires.

A leaked pitch document from last year indicated that acquiring a fintech company was an area of interest for Beast Industries. The company is also reportedly exploring the launch of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), a lower-cost cell phone plan, similar to Mint Mobile.

The acquisition of Step is not an isolated incident. The TechCrunch Equity podcast highlighted a trend of creators ditching reliance on ad revenue in favor of direct-to-consumer products and strategic acquisitions. This shift suggests a growing recognition that long-term financial stability requires ownership and control beyond platform-dependent income.

Beast Industries did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition. The company is also considering an initial public offering (IPO), with CEO Bobby Sarma expressing a desire for fans to have “a chance to be owners of the company,” according to TechCrunch reporting.

G42 & Cerebras to Deploy 8 Exaflops AI Supercomputer in India | India AI Summit 2026

New Delhi – Abu Dhabi-based technology group G42, in partnership with U.S. Chipmaker Cerebras Systems, Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), and India’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), announced plans to deploy an 8 exaflop AI supercomputer in India, marking a significant expansion of the country’s AI infrastructure. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

The system, designed to meet sovereign security and compliance requirements, will operate under India-defined governance frameworks, ensuring all data remains within national jurisdiction. According to G42, the supercomputer will serve as a foundational asset under the India AI Mission, providing access to a diverse ecosystem including research institutions, startups, small and medium enterprises, and government ministries.

“Sovereign AI infrastructure is becoming essential for national competitiveness,” said Manu Jain, CEO of G42 India, in a statement. “This project brings that capability to India at a national scale, enabling local researchers, innovators, and enterprises to become AI-native while maintaining full data sovereignty and security.”

The project follows the 5th India-UAE Strategic Dialogue held in December 2025 and the visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India in January 2026, which solidified a comprehensive partnership framework encompassing defense, technology, space, and energy. The 8 exaflop capacity represents a substantial increase in India’s peak compute capacity, transitioning the country to exaflop-scale AI infrastructure.

Cerebras, known for its advanced AI inference technology, highlighted the system’s potential to accelerate AI development tailored to India’s specific needs. “Deploying this system in India marks a significant step forward in the country’s computational capacity and sovereign AI initiatives,” said Andy Hock, chief strategy officer at Cerebras. “It will accelerate training and inference for large-scale models, enabling researchers and developers to build AI tailored to India’s needs.”

The announcement comes amid a wave of investment in AI infrastructure within India. Indian conglomerate Adani pledged $100 billion to build up to 5 gigawatts of data-center capacity by 2035, while Reliance Industries committed $110 billion over the next seven years for gigawatt-scale data centers. OpenAI has also partnered with Tata Group to secure 100 megawatts of AI compute as part of its Stargate project, with plans to scale to 1 gigawatt.

India’s technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated at the AI Impact Summit that the country aims to attract over $200 billion in infrastructure investment over the next two years through a combination of tax incentives, state-backed venture capital, and supportive policies. U.S. Technology companies, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, have already committed approximately $70 billion to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in the country.

MBZUAI and G42 previously collaborated on the development of Nanda 87B, a Hindi-English large language model built on Meta’s Llama 3.1 70B model, designed to understand casual speech in both languages.

Sarvam AI: Bringing Models to Nokia Phones, Cars & Smart Glasses | TechCrunch

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 18, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

New Delhi – Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam AI unveiled plans to deploy its newly developed AI models on Nokia feature phones, automobiles and its own line of smart glasses at the India AI Impact Summit on Wednesday. The move signals a significant shift for the company, previously focused on enterprise applications, towards consumer-facing technology.

Sarvam’s models are designed as “edge models,” requiring only megabytes of storage and capable of running on existing phone processors, even offline, according to Tushar Goswamy, head of Edge AI at Sarvam. A demonstration at the summit showcased a user interacting with an AI assistant on a Nokia feature phone via a dedicated AI button, receiving guidance on government programs and local market information. It remains unclear whether all showcased features will function without an internet connection.

The company has secured backing from Lightspeed, PeakXV, and Khosla Ventures. Sarvam is partnering with HMD Global, the maker of Nokia-branded phones, to integrate the conversational AI assistant into its devices. The startup is also collaborating with Qualcomm to optimize its models for Qualcomm chipsets, and with German engineering firm Bosch to bring AI assistants to vehicles. At a demonstration, Sarvam showcased an in-car AI assistant responding to driver queries about fuel levels and vehicle maintenance history.

Sarvam also presented its “Sarvam Kaze” smart glasses, manufactured in India, which co-founder Pratyush Kumar described as a “builders’ device” slated for release in May. The company launched two new large language models (LLMs) at the summit: Sarvam 30B and Sarvam 105B. According to reports, the 105B model surpasses the performance of DeepSeek R1.

Sarvam’s emergence as a prominent attraction at the India AI Impact Summit was noted by organizers, who confirmed its pavilion received more visitors than any other company’s, according to reports. The Indian government extended the summit by one day, to Saturday, February 21, in response to the high attendance.

The partnerships with Qualcomm, Bosch, and Nokia HMD were announced at the summit. Sarvam’s collaboration with Nokia HMD will integrate its chatbot technology into feature phones, enabling users to interact with the devices using natural language. The Sarvam 30B model is specifically designed for real-time conversations on these devices.
