Vietnam Boat Refugee to Reliability Engineering Pioneer

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor January 28, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

This text details the incredible journey of a Vietnamese refugee, Pham, from a harrowing escape by boat to achieving academic success in the United States. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:

* The Escape: Pham fled Vietnam by boat in the late 1970s. The journey was brutal, marked by seasickness, lack of food adn water, violent storms, and the threat of pirates. Many perished during this period; estimates suggest 250,000 out of 800,000 boat people didn’t survive.
* Refugee Camps & Initial Hardships: after washing ashore in Malaysia, Pham faced further hardship in refugee camps with scarce resources and widespread disease (he contracted malaria). He was eventually transferred to a transit camp with UN assistance, but his future remained uncertain.
* Arrival in the US & early Struggles: In 1980, Pham was sponsored to come to the United States, landing in snowy Seattle with limited possessions and no English skills. He spent his first two months recovering from illness in the hospital.
* Education & Perseverance: Despite the challenges, Pham was determined to continue his education. He attended Lincoln High School to learn english, excelled in math (passing a calculus class despite his language barrier), and secured a scholarship to college.
* Academic Achievements: Pham earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science, followed by a master’s in statistics and a Ph.D. in reliability engineering, attending National College of Education, Northeastern Illinois University, University of illinois, and SUNY Buffalo.
* Finding His Research Focus: He discovered his research direction while reading IEEE Spectrum in 1988.

The story is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the importance of education in overcoming adversity. It highlights the dangers faced by Vietnamese boat people and the challenges faced by refugees starting a new life in a foreign country.

Jensen Huang Wins 2026 IEEE Medal of Honor for GPU Innovation

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor January 23, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Jensen Huang, cofounder adn CEO of Nvidia, has been named the 2026 IEEE Medal of Honor. The IEEE honorary member is being recognized for his “leadership in the growth of graphics processing units and their submission to scientific computing and artificial intelligence.” the IEEE’s president and CEO, Mary Ellen Randall, announced the news on January 6 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Huang co-founded Nvidia in 1993 and, six years later, led the introduction of the programmable GPU. This innovation sparked breakthroughs in fields like artificial intelligence, computing, and medicine, fundamentally changing how technology benefits society.

“Receiving the IEEE Medal of honor is an astonishing honor,” Huang said at CES. “I thank IEEE for this incredible award that I receive on behalf of all the great employees at Nvidia.”

The award, which includes a US $2 million prize, highlights IEEE’s dedication to honoring visionaries who shape the future of technology for the betterment of humanity.

“The IEEE Medal of Honor is the pinnacle of recognition and our most prestigious award,” Randall stated at the event. “Jensen Huang’s leadership and technical vision have unlocked a new era of innovation. His vision and subsequent development of Nvidia’s first GPU hardware are emblematic of the award.”

Huang’s Impact on Technology

Huang’s influence extends beyond engineering. He was named one of the “Architects of AI,” earning a place among eight tech leaders collectively lauded as Time magazine’s 2025 person of the Year.He also graced the cover of Time magazine in 2021, was recognized as the world’s top-performing CEO by Harvard business Review in 2019, and was named Fortune’s 2017 Businessperson of the Year.

He is also an IEEE–Eta Kappa Nu eminent member.

The IEEE Medal of Honor, alongside other prestigious IEEE awards, will be presented during the IEEE Honors Ceremony in April in New York City. For updates on IEEE’s most prestigious awards, follow IEEE Awards on LinkedIn.
