Houston Sees Decline in Gun Thefts from Vehicles Following Safe Distribution โฃEfforts
HOUSTON – Gun thefts from vehicles in Houston are โdecreasing, aโฃ trendโฃ authorities attribute to proactive community outreach and the โฃdistribution of โfree gun safes. Initiatives led by the โHarris County District Attorney’s Office, the Houston Police Department, and local leaders are credited with the positive shift.
The effort stems from concernsโฃ about the repercussions of leaving firearmsโฃ unsecured in vehicles. “There’s repercussions, somebody’s going โคto suffer somewhere,” said Ronny Cortez, emphasizing the risks. “You have to understand there’s a little bit of negligence involved in that, when you do that, because you don’t know what’s โgoing to happen. you don’t know how โsafe yoru carโค is going toโฃ be. Somebody can just easily break into โขit โand โฃtake โyourโฃ weapon and you don’t know what they’re going to do with it. Youโ don’t know what purpose they have โฃfor it.” Unsecured firearms can fall into the wrong hands, impacting both vehicle owners and the widerโค community.
Sheri Cortez, who works in โขtheโฃ domestic violence bureau of the Harris County โDistrict Attorney’s Office, andโค Hicks began distributing โฃthousands of free gun safes โat community events. “It affects everyone, it affects โคtheโค community, it โaffects peopel who accidentally leave their weapon out, not understandingโฃ repercussions, and then it also โคaffects โthose who areโ victims of the gun violence,”โ Sheri โCortez stated.
the DA’s Office provides freeโข gun โsafes to domestic violence victims โขobtaining protective orders, and also partners โwith the HPD Positive โInteraction Program (PIP)โ to distribute safes at community meetings and through management district events.Ronnyโค Cortez joined the efforts, noting, “The word โฃis โคgetting out,โ it is helping.”
Residents can inquire about obtaining a gun safe by emailing the DA’s Officeโ at da@dao.hctx.net or checking โthe HPD’s PIP schedule at https://www.houstontx.gov/police/pip/. Councilmember โคAbieโฃ kamin’s ‘Lockโค It Up Safe’ initiative is another community effort providing free gun โคsafes.
