Sony Aims โขfor 2027 Theatrical Release of ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Movie
Sonyโค Pictures is actively pursuingโฃ a 2027 release for a feature film โขadaptation of the critically acclaimed video game horizon Zero Dawn. According to a legal declaration filed October 16 by PlayStation productions head Asad Qizilbash, the studio currently has a working script and is seeking a director, with plans to begin filming in 2026.
the project represents Sony’s continued push to expand its PlayStationโ universe onto the big screen, following the success of The Last of Us on television. Qizilbash emphasized the importance of the game’s protagonist,โ Aloy, as “a key icon โin theโค anticipated film” and vitalโฃ “to the flywheel of โfranchise building.” โThis move comes after previous plans for a Netflix television series were scrapped in 2024 following allegationsโ of abuse and misconduct against intended co-showrunner Steven Blackman.
originally released in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn is a sci-fi action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by robotic creatures. The game garnered notableโ praiseโค for its compelling narrative,โ stunning visuals, โand โฃunique gameplay. Sony โฃis also developing film โand โtelevisionโ adaptations of other popular PlayStation properties, including God of War, Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei, โขandโ Helldivers.
The potential 2027 release date places โ Horizon in directโค competition โคwith Nintendo’sโค Legend of Zelda movie, scheduled to โขpremiere on May 7, 2027. Horizonโ Zero Dawn was initially overshadowed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of โฃthe Wild upon its release in 2017, a parallel that couldโข repeat itself on the โขbig screen.
Currently, Sony is also engaged in โa โlegal dispute with tencent, alleging that theirโ game Light of Motiram is an “explicit clone” of the Horizon franchise.โ Sony claimsโ the damage from the alleged copying โis ongoing.
