Sept 11 Attacks: What Happened, Flags at Half-Staff & Patriot Day

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 12, 2025

Flags at Half-Staff ‍Across New York State on Patriot Day

NEW YORK – ⁢ Flags across ‌New York State are flying at half-staff today,‍ september 11, 2025, in solemn remembrance of⁢ the⁤ nearly 3,000 lives lost in⁢ the⁣ terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The lowering of⁢ the flag⁢ is a longstanding tradition observed annually to honor the victims and heroes of that ‍tragic day, and to reaffirm a national commitment to unity and remembrance.

Twenty-four years after the ⁤attacks,⁣ Patriot ⁣Day remains a notable day of reflection for New Yorkers and the nation. While not a federal holiday – ⁣government⁣ offices‍ remain open and mail delivery continues – the day‌ is officially recognized through public law, encouraging remembrance activities, flag displays at half-staff, and ⁢moments of silence. This year’s‍ observance⁤ comes as‌ the nation continues ‍to grapple with issues of ⁢national‌ security⁣ and the enduring legacy of ⁢9/11.

In December 2001, Public ⁣Law ⁤107-89 was‍ enacted, officially‍ designating September 11th as Patriot Day.The law requests⁢ the⁢ President⁣ to⁢ issue a proclamation calling‍ for⁤ state and local governments to observe the‍ day⁢ with programs and activities, for ⁢the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff in⁣ memory of those who perished, and for a moment of silence to be observed nationwide.

Further solidifying the day’s significance, Public Law ⁤111-13, ⁣passed in 2009, designated September 11th as the National ⁢Day of Service and Remembrance,⁢ encouraging⁤ Americans to honor‌ the victims through volunteerism and⁤ community service.

The Great Fear: How Epidemiology Explained the French Revolution

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor September 12, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

“The Great Fear” Grips France, Sparking Widespread ⁣Panic and Violence in ⁤july 1789

Paris, ⁣France ⁣- A wave of rural panic, known as “La Grande⁤ Peur” (The Great Fear), swept across‌ France throughout July 1789, fueled by ⁤rumors of aristocratic conspiracies and brigand attacks. The escalating‌ anxieties, coinciding with the dismissal of popular Finance Minister Jacques Necker on⁢ July 11th, triggered widespread peasant revolts and contributed significantly to the unraveling of the existing social order, ultimately culminating in the storming of the Bastille.

The fear began in the countryside, initially ⁢sparked by poor harvests and rising bread prices, exacerbating existing economic⁢ hardship. ⁣ However, these concerns quickly morphed into terrifying tales of “brigands” – often‌ falsely identified as aristocratic ⁤mercenaries hired to‌ suppress the burgeoning Third Estate – roaming the land, destroying ⁤crops, and attacking‌ villagers. These rumors, spread rapidly through word of mouth and rudimentary pamphlets, ignited a self-perpetuating cycle of fear and violence. ⁣Historians now recognize‍ the “brigands” were largely a fabrication, or opportunistic‍ common criminals taking advantage of the chaos, but the⁣ perception of‌ a deliberate aristocratic plot proved devastating.

Reports from ⁣across France ‍detail a climate of intense paranoia. On July 14th,the gazette de France ⁤ reported widespread unrest ‍in the Île-de-France region, noting villagers arming themselves and forming militias⁤ to defend against the perceived threat. ⁤ In ⁤the ⁤Burgundy region, local authorities received panicked reports of châteaux being burned and nobles fleeing their estates.the Abbé ‍Sieyès, a prominent clergyman and political theorist, wrote on‌ July 17th that the countryside was “in a state of complete agitation,” and that “the people are convinced that the aristocracy is plotting against ⁢them.”

The impact extended ‍beyond isolated incidents ⁤of⁤ property damage. Peasants, driven by fear and a desire for retribution, began attacking ⁣manor houses, ⁣destroying feudal records -‌ the ⁤ terriers ‌ – which documented their obligations to landlords. This destruction of⁣ records was a symbolic and practical act ⁣of defiance, aimed at dismantling the feudal system.

The Great ⁤Fear directly influenced⁤ events in Paris. News of the rural uprisings ⁢reached the capital, contributing to the⁢ already volatile ⁢atmosphere. The dismissal of Necker, seen as sympathetic to the Third Estate, further inflamed tensions. On July 14th, Parisians stormed the Bastille, ‌a royal prison, seeking ‍weapons and gunpowder, an event widely considered the start of the French Revolution.

While the immediate threat of⁢ brigands proved largely unfounded,‌ the Great Fear ⁢exposed the deep-seated anxieties and resentments ⁤simmering within French society. It demonstrated the fragility‍ of royal⁢ authority and the power of rumor and misinformation to incite widespread panic and‍ ultimately,⁣ revolution. ‌ The events ⁢of July 1789 irrevocably altered the ⁢course of French history, laying the foundation for a new political and social order.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia defeated Palestine ⁣1-0 in a friendly match held at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Monday (Sept 8), marking their first ⁤victory over the West Asian side in 24 ⁤years.

Brazilian-born forward Joao Figueiredo scored the decisive⁣ goal just two minutes into the match, converting⁤ a low cross from right wingback Quentin Cheng. Figueiredo⁣ is now the third Malaysian player to score in ‍his ⁢first‌ three international appearances, joining the late Datuk Mokhtar Dahari (1972) and Nizaruddin Yusof (1999).

Palestine came close to ⁣equalizing in the 32nd minute with⁣ a ⁢header from Bader Mousa off a ⁣cross ⁢by Tamer Seyam, but Malaysian goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi made ⁤a crucial save. malaysia responded with ‌an⁣ prospect ‌in the 34th minute, as Gabriel Palmero’s attempt ⁢was denied by ⁤Rami Hamada.

Malaysia controlled ‍possession in the first⁤ half, with 55% of the ball and creating seven chances.

A defensive adjustment saw La’Vere Corbin-Ong ‍replace Dominic Tan at‌ the start of the second ⁣half, joining Shahrul Saad and Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar in ‌a back three.

Both teams continued to create opportunities, but Malaysia maintained their lead. scottish-based wingback Richard Chin made his debut ⁤in the 78th minute, replacing Quentin Cheng to earn⁢ his⁢ first Malaysian cap.

This win represents Malaysia’s first triumph over Palestine as a 4-3 victory in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers in 2001, a ‌match overseen by the late Allan Harris. Hairuddin Omar scored twice in that⁤ game, with ‍Akmal ‌Rizal Rakhli and⁤ Irwan Fadzly Idrus also finding the net.
