RTV Noord Hack: private Data stolen inโค non-Targeted Attack
Groningen,โค Netherlands – Private information belonging to โขemployees of regionalโฃ broadcaster RTV Noord was stolen during a โransomware attack last week, the organization confirmed today. Forensic analysisโฃ indicates the hack โฃwas not a targetedโข operation, but โrather part of a global campaign by criminals encrypting systems and demanding ransom from randomโข organizations.
Theโ attack, discoveredโค last Thursday, โdisrupted broadcasts and publications across all โRTV Noord platforms. While systems are now operational, with or โฃwithout choice solutions, the broadcaster hasโ refusedโ toโข pay the ransom, citing concerns that payment does not guarantee the stolen data won’t appear on the dark web.Employees whose โdataโ was compromised have been notified, as the โฃstolen information couldโค be used for โtargetedโฃ phishing attempts.
According to RTV Noord, theโ attack was not the result of an employee falling victim to a phishing scam. The criminals are threatening to publish the privateโ data if their demands are not โคmet. “as a public โorganization, the broadcaster does not want to โคpay money to criminals,” โRTV Noord stated.
The incident is described as a “time-consuming operation” expected to continue for some time โฃas theโ broadcaster works to fully restore systems and โขmitigate potential damage.
