WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature allowing new members of group chats to access previously shared messages, addressing a long-standing user frustration. The feature, dubbed “Group Message History,” enables group administrators and members to share between 25 and 100 recent messages with newly added participants, providing context without requiring screenshots or manual forwarding of information.
The update aims to streamline the onboarding process for new group members, particularly in scenarios such as workplaces where individuals may join conversations mid-stream. Previously, newcomers were often left to request summaries or rely on others to catch them up on prior discussions. According to WhatsApp, the feature is a direct response to user requests.
While offering a solution to information gaps, WhatsApp has implemented safeguards to maintain privacy and transparency. All shared message histories are end-to-end encrypted, consistent with the platform’s existing security protocols. All group members receive a notification when a message history is sent, with the shared messages visually distinguished from new chats through timestamps and sender information.
Administrators control access to the feature; We see not automatically enabled. They can also disable the function for specific groups and retain the ability to share message histories independently. The option to share a portion of the chat history is presented immediately after a new member is added to the group, with no subsequent opportunities to do so unless the member is removed and re-added.
The rollout of Group Message History is currently underway and will be gradually available to all WhatsApp users. The feature is intended to reduce the need for cumbersome workarounds, such as sharing screenshots or repeatedly forwarding older messages to provide context to new group participants.
