GM to Phase Out Apple carplay and Android auto in All Newโข vehicles
detroit,MI – November โข6,2024 – General โขMotors is extending its plan to remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support to all future vehicles, including thoseโ powered by gasoline, the โคcompany confirmed this week. The move, which began โwith select electric โvehicles in 2023, stems โfrom a strategic decision to prioritize GM’s own in-house infotainment system and centralized vehicle computing platform.
GM CEO Mary Barra told The Verge that the โcompanyโ will consistently move toward eliminating smartphone โprojection features likeโ CarPlay and Android Auto with eachโ new vehicle and major launch. “I โthink that’s the right expectation. Yes,” Barra stated when asked if new gasโค cars would lack support for these systems.
The initial phase-out focused on GM’s electric vehicle line, with โthe company citing the need for direct integrations and data access for its EVs. GM previously called its infotainment system “Ultifi.” According to GM, a unified, โขin-house solution is โthe “better option for consumers.”
GM Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson likened the decision to Apple’s phasing out โof โขthe disk drive, describing โit as a “very Jobsianโฃ approach.” Heโข noted, “The removalโข of the disk drive, nobody likedโ thatโฆbut to that โhe said, ‘Look, guys, flash storage really is the future. Get on board, you’ll see that.’ That’s kind of what we’re saying here, โฃactually that’sโฃ exactly what we’re saying.” Andersonโฃ also โคasserted that GM’s system offers a “much more immersive environment” and greater functionality โคthan CarPlay.
The shift will be โimplemented with the rollout of a new centralizedโข vehicle computing system, beginning with the โข2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ. This systemโค will standardize โsoftware across โขall GM brands – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillacโ – forโ bothโฃ electric and gasoline-powered vehicles, enabling over-the-airโ updatesโ and unified functionality.
