Estonian PM Michal Urges Continued Pressure on Russia, Highlights Strong Germany-Estonia Partnership
During an official visit to Germany, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal (Reform) met with Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine and European security. Michal stressed the need to maintain strong pressure on Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace, emphasizing the importance of clear demands to prevent future attacks and the provision of sufficient, rapid military assistance to Ukraine.
“European unity and courage are notably vital at this time,” Michal stated, advocating for the swift utilization of frozen Russian assets and progress on European union enlargement at the upcoming December European Council meeting. He underscored the necessity of credible security guarantees for Ukraine, backed by tangible support from partner nations, and confirmed Estonia’s commitment to contribute a company-sized unit, instructors, and staff officers.
Michal praised Germany’s leadership role in safeguarding the future of Ukraine and Europe, highlighting the crucial impact of German Patriot air defense systems on Ukraine’s defense capabilities. He noted Estonia’s meaningful military support for Ukraine, exceeding 0.3% of its GDP this year.
The Prime Minister also emphasized Germany’s vital role in Baltic Sea region security, acknowledging its contributions to NATO’s presence in Lithuania and Baltic air security operations. He expressed hope for German support in strengthening the EU’s eastern border defenses.
Beyond security,the leaders discussed economic cooperation. Germany is Estonia’s largest defense procurement partner, and Michal expressed a desire to expand collaboration in this area, as well as in digitalization, artificial intelligence, energy, and green technologies. He highlighted a new €100 million Estonian defense fund,inviting german companies to invest in military and dual-use technologies.
Michal also pointed to growing investment in Germany by Estonian companies, citing the opening of a €220 million Skeleton Technologies factory near Leipzig as a prime example of successful collaboration between Estonian digital expertise and German industry.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with German investors interested in Estonian partnerships during his visit.
