PS5 Pro: Enhance PSSR Image Quality – Resident Evil & More?

Sony has released an updated version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for the PlayStation 5 Pro, with Capcom’s newly released Resident Evil Requiem being the first title to utilize the enhanced upscaling technology. The update, announced February 27, 2026, aims to improve both image quality and performance on the PS5 Pro.

PSSR is a key component of the PS5 Pro’s graphical capabilities, employing artificial intelligence to analyze and upscale individual image pixels. According to Sony, the technology has already been implemented in over 50 PS5 Pro games. The revised version of PSSR features a fundamentally reworked neural network and underlying algorithm, representing a significant advancement over the initial implementation.

“We have been working intensively on a new version of PSSR that fundamentally revises not only the neural network but also the algorithm as a whole,” explained PlayStation System Architect Mark Cerny in a statement. “We are pleased to announce that Resident Evil Requiem, available today, is the first title to utilize this advanced PSSR technology, which helps maintain both high frame rates and high image quality.”

Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin highlighted the benefits of the updated PSSR for Resident Evil Requiem, noting its impact on the game’s visual fidelity. “In Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on improving the rendering quality of the protagonist through an updated version of the RE Engine, to allow players to experience the horror even more intensely,” Ijuin stated. “For example, each individual strand of hair and beard hair is rendered as a polygon, allowing them to move more realistically in response to body movements and wind. The way light falls through his hair also changes depending on how his strands overlap. This precise depiction of textures is one of the many details we are particularly excited for our fans to see. The updated PSSR allowed us to improve our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and structural features.”

Sony plans to roll out the updated PSSR globally for PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks. A system update scheduled for March will introduce a new option within the PS5 Pro’s settings, allowing users to enable the enhanced PSSR version for existing games that already support the technology, such as Ghost of Yotei, without requiring specific patches from developers. While developers can still optimize their games specifically for the upgraded model through future updates, the new system-level toggle offers immediate visual improvements for a wider range of titles.

To enable the feature, users can navigate to the ‘Screen and Video’ section of their PS5 Pro system settings and activate ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ under ‘Video Output’ settings.
