Frank McCourt Still โPursuing TikTok Option Despite White House deal
WASHINGTON โคD.C. – billionaireโ Frank McCourt isโ continuingโ to develop a privacy-focused alternative to TikTok, evenโข as the โฃWhite House moves forward withโ a deal โคto allow ByteDance to โฃretain ownership ofโข the popular socialโฃ media platform. McCourt, through his Projectโ Libertyโค initiative, previouslyโข submitted aโ $20 โbillion โฃbid โfor TikTok’s U.S. operations – valuing โthe company $6 billion more than the โคWhite house’s โคproposed $14 billion deal – but without its core algorithm.
The Project Liberty offer, dubbed theโค “People’s bid for TikTok,” aimed โฃto restructureโ the platform to collect lessโ user data and implement a new algorithm developed by the Project Liberty nonprofit. This contrasts with the White House’s plan,โฃ whichโข lacked details regarding ownership and offered a valuation that confused investors givenโข ByteDance’s estimated $330 billion overall value.
Whileโ notโ actively opposing the current White Houseโค agreement, mccourt stated it is “too early to say”โ what further action Project Liberty will take. A key concern remains the privacy protections that will be implemented. โฃ”Big tech platforms are scrapingโฃ and accumulating our data,โฃ hyper, micro-profiling us, โand now they’re not just selling usโ ads, but they’re manipulatingโค us,” McCourt โขsaid. โ”Our โฃdata is our โฃpersonhood in a โคdigital age โฆ We should share what we want to share about โฃourselves.”
Should acquiring TikTok prove unachievable, McCourt intends to repurpose Project โLiberty’s technology into an AI agent designed to give users control over their personal information as they navigate the web and interactโค with โฃAIโ systems.
Notably, despite claims by former President trump that Chinese President Xi Jinpingโฃ approved the deal, no ByteDance representatives were present โat the executive order โsigning, and โขthe chineseโ government has โขremained publicly silent on the matter.โข McCourt,โ along with Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian โand others, initially sought to purchase TikTok before Trump’s involvement, proposing โคaโข sale excluding the โคalgorithm – a condition China had previously resisted.
