Apple Eyes India for Foldableโค iPhone Production Following โTaiwan โคTest Run
Cupertino, California โ- Apple is planning to manufacture โคits highly anticipatedโค foldable iPhone in India, following initial test production โฃinโฃ Taiwan, accordingโ to a new report from โฃNikkei.the move signals โคa continued shift in Apple’s โคmanufacturing strategy, diversifying โaway from โขits heavy reliance on โchina.
The company is currently in discussions with suppliers โtoโข establish a test production line for the foldable iPhone inโค Taiwan. โIf accomplished,โ massโ production is slated to move to โคIndia,โข possibly launching โคthe device next year. Apple โขanticipates the foldable smartphone will โฃincrease total shipments by 10% in โ2026.
Advancement of aโข foldable iPhone has been ongoing for years, as competitors like Samsung, Google, โMotorola, and Huawei have already releasedโ multiple folding devices. Despite speculation ahead of Apple’s Septemberโข 9 hardware event, the โcompanyโฃ instead unveiled its slimmest iPhone yet, the iPhone Air.
This development coincides with a significant expansion of iPhone production within India. Apple is now โassembling allโข iPhone 17 models -โฃ including the base, Pro, andโ Proโฃ Max versions – across five local factories, with two new facilities recently โcoming online. โคThese facilities,operatedโ by Tata Group in Hosur,Tamil Nadu,and Foxconn near Bengaluru airport,are central to thisโ increased output. โ
Notably, iPhone shipments to the US already represent aโ substantial portion of Tata Electronics’ revenue, accounting forโ overโฃ Rs 23,112 crore (approximately $2.78 billion USD) – or 37% โ- of the company’s FY25 revenue.
Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed in an โคAugust earnings call that theโ “vastโค majority” of iPhones sold in the US โare now made in India, while the majority of other products like macs, iPads, and Watches are manufacturedโ in Vietnam. He also noted that “the vast majority” โคof products for โother countries still originate from China.
