investigating the Acceptability and Feasibility of online Support forโข Caregivers ofโค Infants with Feeding Difficulties
Colic, Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux (Disorder; GOR[D]), and Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) areโข frequently diagnosed in infants โduring their first six months, often leading to significantโ infant irritability,โฃ healthcare โcosts, and reduced caregiver wellbeing. While interventions like peer support, music therapy, and health education have proven effective for other perinatal mental health challenges – such as postpartum depression โข- their application in an onlineโค format forโ caregiversโ of โคinfants with colic, โGOR(D), and โCMPA remains largely unexplored.
Thisโฃ pilot study, conducted at Alder Hey Children’s NHS โFoundation Trust, aimed toโ assess the acceptability โandโค feasibilityโข of a combined โintervention โขoffering non-clinical peer support, health education, and music therapy to caregivers, compared toโ standard care. Eligibleโฃ caregivers were recruited during routine appointments with the infant feedingโ team and assigned to one of four intervention groups.
The peer support componentโค included a dedicated WhatsApp group alongside group sessions. The intervention โขspanned โseven weeks, with the first three weeks focusedโข on one-hour online โgroup โขsessions designed to equip caregivers with skills for managing infantโข symptoms and promoting self-care. Weeks four through six encouraged independent applicationโ of these skills. Inโฃ week seven, evaluative focus groups were heldโค to โฃgather feedback. Data from the WhatsApp groupsโข were analyzed using conversational analysis, while focusโข group data underwent thematicโ analysis.
Despite difficulties in recruiting a sufficient number of participants – โpreventingโ a full assessmentโข of feasibility – the โฃstudy demonstrated the โคacceptability of theโ peer โฃsupport โคintervention to both mothers and healthcare staff.Participants notably valued the flexibility and accessibility of the WhatsApp group, fostering connection with other mothers experiencingโ similar challenges. Insights gained โfrom the โขfocus groups regarding study strengths and limitations will beโ valuable for digital health researchers developing future interventions for caregivers of infants with colic,GOR(D),and/or CMPA.
