Bogotá Braces for Corpus Christi Exodus, Traffic Snarls Expected

As the Corpus Christi holiday nears, authorities in Bogotá are preparing for a surge of vehicles leaving the city and a significant number of new arrivals. Officials are deploying resources to manage the anticipated traffic flow and respond to any incidents that may arise during the long weekend.

Traffic Management and Road Closures

According to the mayor of Bogotá, it’s anticipated that over 940,000 vehicles will depart the city while roughly 995,000 will enter during the holiday. To ensure safety, 275 traffic police officers and agents will be stationed at key entry and exit points, including the El Dorado Airport and major highways.

Traffic guides are managing mobility near the Simón Bolívar Park, due to the Rock al Park festival. Authorities also reported an overturned vehicle on race 56 with 4a Street in the Puente Aranda area. The Traffic Police, firefighters, and ambulances attended the scene. A stranded truck was reported on the North Highway near Suba.

Pico and Placa Restrictions

The “Pico y Placa” restrictions will be in effect to regulate traffic flow. Private vehicles with plates ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) will be allowed to enter Bogotá between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Vehicles with plates ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) can enter from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All vehicles are permitted before 12:00 p.m. and after 8:00 p.m.

The Coviandina has reported a 24-hour lane passage in the Broken Tunnel and at the K69+350. Moderate vehicular flow is present.

Road Closures for ‘Rock al Park’

Road closures for the ‘Rock al Park’ festival include the North Calzada of Avenida Calle 63 between Carrera 60 and Avenida Carrera 68, and the South Calzada of Avenida Calle 63 between Carrera 68 and Carrera 60. These closures will be in effect from June 21 to 23, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Cyclorruta Sur Calzada de la Avenida Calle 63 between Avenida Carrera 68 and Avenida Carrera 60 will also be closed during the same dates and times.

An accident occurred on the South Highway with Villavicencio Avenue, involving a tractocamión and a car. This has caused mobility problems at this location. The city’s roads are expected to be used by many travelers during this holiday period. The local government reminds drivers to exercise caution. According to a recent study by the National Road Safety Agency, traffic fatalities rise by approximately 15% during holiday weekends (National Road Safety Agency 2024).
