The silver market in London is igniting the biggest storm in 4 decades economy

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 12, 2025

Silver market Turmoil Signals Potential for Global Economic Disruption

LONDON – The silver market is experiencing a surge in ⁤volatility not seen in four decades, sparking concerns about broader financial instability. A confluence of factors,⁣ including new U.S. tariffs⁣ and heightened‌ demand, is driving ⁢prices upward and ‍raising fears of a supply crunch‍ reminiscent of the 1980 silver crisis triggered⁤ by the‌ Hunt brothers.

The escalating situation extends beyond precious metals trading, serving as a warning sign ‍of vulnerabilities ⁤within the global financial system. Experts caution that if confidence isn’t restored among banks, mining companies, ‍and investment⁤ funds, the current silver crisis could evolve into a notable economic event, potentially mirroring past financial upheavals. The metal, historically a symbol of wealth, now threatens to become a catalyst for global economic turbulence.

Recent tariffs imposed by the U.S.on silver imports, enacted as part of ‍a ‍”Section 232″ investigation into critical metals, are exacerbating existing supply constraints. Amy Gower, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, warned that increasing tariffs will “increase the holding of the metal in the US market, exacerbating the scarcity of supply ‍in London,” adding that “high prices may temporarily lead to‍ a rebalancing, but they are not a lasting solution‌ to the crisis.”

The current crisis echoes the events of 45 ‌years ‌ago, when the Hunt brothers⁢ attempted to ⁣corner the silver market, demonstrating how speculation and scarcity can⁤ destabilize even established markets. The⁤ potential for a repeat ⁣of such a scenario‍ is fueling anxiety among investors and policymakers alike. The situation is being closely monitored for its potential‌ to trigger ‌wider economic repercussions.

EU Biometric Border Checks: What Travelers Need to Know

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 11, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

EU to Implement Biometric Border Checks for Travellers from October ⁣12

Brussels, ⁢Belgium – From Sunday,⁤ October 12, travellers to the European Union will be ⁢subject to new biometric border checks requiring the submission of fingerprints and photographs.‍ The changes apply to ⁣non-EU citizens, including Australian tourists, and are part⁤ of enhanced security measures at ⁤the ‍bloc’s⁢ borders.

The process is free of charge. Travellers will also be asked to ‌answer⁤ questions based on the Schengen⁤ Border Code upon arrival. While the registration process is expected to take only a ⁢few minutes, authorities warn of potential for longer wait times at airports as the ⁣system ⁣is implemented.

The european union anticipates minimal disruption,‍ however, the British government has advised travellers to allow‍ extra time for their journeys⁢ while the new systems become fully operational. Border‍ officials retain the ability to temporarily suspend checks if⁣ processing times become excessive.

These new checks are a preliminary step towards further changes planned for‍ 2026 with the introduction of the European ‌Travel Details⁣ and Authorisation ‍System (ETIAS).ETIAS will require⁣ non-Schengen‍ area citizens ⁢to obtain authorisation prior to travel, providing personal and ‌trip details and‌ paying a €20 ($35 AUD) fee. This authorisation ⁤will be valid for three years or until passport expiry, whichever occurs first.

Who are the five Nobel Peace Prize judges deciding whether Trump gets it? | Conflict News

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 10, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Norway’s Nobel Committee navigates Global Tensions and High-profile Nominations

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is facing a particularly complex year as ⁢it deliberates the‍ 2025 Nobel Peace⁢ Prize, amidst ongoing global conflicts, democratic backsliding, and intense scrutiny surrounding potential nominees ⁣- including former US president Donald Trump.

Committee member Jostein Frydnes has emphasized the committee’s ⁢commitment to impartiality, stating that attempts at influence are counterproductive. “Thes types‌ of influence⁤ campaigns have a rather more negative effect than a positive ⁤one, because we talk about it on the committee. Some candidates push for it ‍really hard, and we⁢ do not like ‍it,” he ⁤told The National. He further ⁤stressed the committee’s preference for working “in a locked room without being attempted to be influenced.”

While Frydnes acknowledged the attention surrounding Trump and the MAGA‌ political movement, he has not indicated whether he⁢ would support Trump’s candidacy.⁤

The current geopolitical landscape adds weight to‌ the committee’s decisions. Frydnes acknowledged the global focus ‍on the prize, ⁣stating that “the ⁤world ‍is listening, and the world is discussing, and discussing⁢ how we can achieve peace is a good thing.” He affirmed the committee’s resolve to ‌”stay strong‌ and principled in ⁣our choices… that’s our job.”

However, concerns ⁤are growing within Norway ⁣regarding potential repercussions should Trump not be awarded the prize. The US⁣ has already⁢ implemented a 15 percent tariff on⁤ Norwegian exports. Moreover, ⁤the Trump administration ‍expressed displeasure after Norway’s sovereign ‍wealth fund – valued at approximately $2 trillion – announced its divestment from US company Caterpillar due ⁤to its ties to Israel’s actions in Gaza. Despite these tensions, Foreign Minister Espen Barth⁣ Eide clarified to Bloomberg on October 3rd that the Norwegian government ⁤does not interfere with the Nobel Peace Prize selection process.

this year, the committee received a total of 338 nominations:‌ 244 individuals and 94 organizations. The committee maintains strict confidentiality regarding ‍nominees, neither confirming names to the media nor to the candidates themselves.

Several contenders are emerging as potential recipients. Sudan’s ⁣Emergency Response Rooms, a volunteer network providing crucial aid to civilians in the war-torn country, and Yulia Navalnaya, the⁣ widow of ‍deceased⁣ Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, ⁣are considered strong possibilities. According to bookmakers like Ladbrokes,⁢ Trump⁤ and ‌the Sudanese⁣ group are currently the frontrunners.

Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo,⁤ highlighted the Emergency Response Rooms as a⁢ particularly deserving‌ candidate. she explained that these local‍ organizers are providing essential services like communal kitchens,‌ evacuations, medical care, and⁤ infrastructure repair to ⁤communities affected by the conflict. Awarding the prize to such an initiative would, according to Graeger, “highlight the critical importance of access to lifesaving aid⁤ in times of conflict, and‍ the power of everyday citizens to serve ⁢humanity in tough times.”

Graeger ⁣also identified the Committee to protect Journalists as a worthy recipient, arguing that recognizing their work would⁣ send a powerful message about ‍the importance of a free press for peace and democracy, particularly ⁢in conflict zones.

Germany Solar Auction: Prices Plummet to 5.31 Cents/kWh

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 9, 2025

Germany Awards 490MW of Solar-Plus-Storage Capacity in Latest Auction, ⁤Prices Continue to Fall

Berlin, Germany – Germany’s ‌Federal ⁢Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has awarded 490MW of capacity to solar-plus-storage projects in its latest innovation⁢ auction, demonstrating continued cost declines and strong market demand for ⁣combined renewable energy ⁤and storage solutions. The auction results, announced today, reveal successful bids ranging from 4.79 cents/kWh to ⁣5.59 cents/kWh, with a volume-weighted average price of 5.31 cents/kWh.

This latest round marks a critically important‌ drop from previous⁣ auctions, with the average price “considerably lower” than the 6.15 cents/kWh achieved in the July 2024 auction,⁣ which ⁣was already ‌four times oversubscribed. Prior‌ to that, the October 2024 round⁢ settled at 7.45 cents/kWh, ‌and July’s‍ auction⁤ at ⁣6.15 cents/kWh,illustrating a consistent downward‌ trend in pricing. The cumulative capacity bid⁣ also ‍reached ⁣a new high, exceeding ⁤the 2GW mark set in⁤ the July auction.

Bavaria secured the largest share of awarded capacity with 122MW across 11 projects, followed by Schleswig-Holstein and brandenburg, each receiving approximately 50MW. Notably, all successful bids were for solar-plus-storage projects, highlighting ⁤their increasing competitiveness.

“The falling prices, fierce competition and high⁢ demand ⁤speak to the economics ⁤of renewable energy⁣ in Germany,” reflects the current market dynamics. Industry experts, including Brent⁤ Wanner, head of the World Energy Outlooks’ power sector⁣ unit at the International Energy Agency (IEA), ‌have‍ noted that solar-plus-storage is becoming “increasingly cost-competitive” in major markets globally. Though,⁣ Wanner also emphasized the need for⁣ market adaptation ⁢to better accommodate ⁣these co-located assets.

The declining costs are driven‍ by falling prices for ⁣both solar equipment and battery technology. The IEA’s Renewables‍ 2025 report forecasts that PV⁢ will account for around 80% of global ‍renewables expansion over ‍the next five years, largely due to its ⁤affordability and ease of deployment.

The ⁣results ‌come as the German solar trade association,Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-solar),this week called on the government to establish a‍ legally binding⁣ target of 100GWh of⁣ energy storage ‌capacity by 2030,signaling the ‌industry’s ambition for continued growth in this sector.

Title: Milan vs. Como in Perth: Rabiot Questions Abroad Matches

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor October 8, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Perth, Australia – AC Milan will play a Serie A match against Como in perth, Australia, in February 2026, marking a historic first for a major European football league. The decision, greenlit by UEFA on Monday with “a heavy ⁢heart,” alongside a Villarreal vs. Barcelona match slated for Miami,⁢ is already ⁣drawing criticism from ‌players.

Milan midfielder Adrien Rabiot voiced his disbelief, calling the plan “absolutely crazy.”⁤ “There‍ are financial agreements to ensure the league has a certain level of visibility, but all⁢ this is ⁤out of our control,”⁣ Rabiot told Le Figaro on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as reported by The Athletic. “It’s‍ crazy to travel thousands of‍ kilometers to play a match between two Italian teams in Australia. We ⁢have to adapt. As usual. There is a lot of talk about schedules and player health, but all this feels very ⁢absurd.”

The Serie A match and the Barcelona-Villarreal game require⁣ final approval from FIFA. Previously, only Super Cups – like the Italian and Spanish versions -‌ have been held outside of their respective countries. The Barcelona match is scheduled for December.

The move comes after the German ⁢Bundesliga (DFL) rejected similar proposals, and the‌ English Premier League faced opposition from FIFA and fans when considering overseas matches in 2008.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Nobel Prize for Water Harvesting Innovation

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 8, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Nobel Prize in Chemistry⁤ 2025 Awarded for⁣ Breakthroughs in‌ Metal-Organic⁤ Frameworks

The royal Swedish Academy‍ of Sciences has announced the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recognizing Susumu Kitagawa, richard Robson, and Omar M Yaghi for their pioneering work in the growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The award, presented on Wednesday, ⁤celebrates their contributions to creating materials with remarkable potential for⁢ addressing global challenges.

MOFs are described as “molecular constructions with large spaces” capable of selectively capturing and storing gases and chemicals. This unique property opens doors to a wide range of applications, including harvesting water from arid environments, capturing carbon dioxide emissions, safely ‍storing hazardous gases, and even removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water sources.

Heiner Linke, chair of the⁢ Nobel ⁣Committee for Chemistry, highlighted the transformative potential of MOFs, stating they offer “previously unforeseen opportunities for⁣ custom-made materials with new functions.” Committee member Olof Ramström drew a compelling analogy, comparing the internal ⁣volume of these structures to the seemingly bottomless handbag of ⁣Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series.

The scientists’ work, though conducted independently, built upon each other’s discoveries. Robson’s‍ initial 1989 experiment involved combining copper ions with a multi-armed molecule, resulting‌ in a diamond-shaped structure with internal cavities. However, this early framework proved unstable. Kitagawa and yaghi subsequently tackled this challenge, with Kitagawa demonstrating the ‍possibility of creating flexible mofs and Yaghi pioneering ‍a method for ⁢their rational⁢ design and stabilization between 1992 and 2003.

These MOFs can⁣ be visualized as ‌the structural⁤ framework of a house, capable of absorbing and containing‍ gases for various practical applications.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry ⁣was awarded to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper for their advancements in protein design using AI. Earlier this week, the Nobel prize in Medicine went to Mary E. Brunkow,Fred ⁣Ramsdell, and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi for their work on immune tolerance, and the Physics prize was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. devoret, and John ⁣M. Martinis for their research on quantum tunneling.

The Nobel announcements will continue with the Literature prize on ⁢Thursday, the Peace Prize on Friday, and the Economics prize next Monday. The formal award ceremony will take place on December 10th, the anniversary of ⁤Alfred Nobel’s death. Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite, established the prizes through his will in 1896.
