IEEE Initiatives Fuel Growth of African Engineering Talent
Atlanta, GA – A surge in IEEE support is bolstering the growth of engineering talent across Africa, addressing critical barriers to education and professional advancement, according to recent reports and firsthand accounts. The association’s efforts focus on expanding access to reliable electricity, broadband internet, and essential educational resources – factors identified as crucial for the region’s engineering future.
The push comes as Africa strives to develop its engineering workforce, a challenge highlighted in a recent IEEE Spectrum feature exploring the experiences of emerging engineers like Tosin, a Nigerian scholar. The article, “Learning More With Less,” co-authored with Engineer Bainomugisha of Makerere University in Uganda, underscores the common obstacles faced by aspiring engineers in the region.
A key component of IEEE’s strategy is providing financial assistance and networking opportunities. Tosin recently attended the IEEE ICRA robotics conference in Atlanta this past May on a scholarship from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.There, he connected with peers and leading engineers, gaining invaluable exposure to cutting-edge robotics technology.
IEEE is also tackling infrastructure deficits. IEEE Spectrum reports on Zachary’s article, “What it Will really take to Electrify All of Africa,” detailing an initiative aiming to bring electricity to 300 million more people by 2030. Simultaneously, lucas Laursen’s article, “In Nigeria, Why Isn’t broadband Everywhere?” investigates the challenges of expanding broadband access despite the country’s substantial undersea cable capacity - currently 380 terabits delivered via eight cables, yet reaching less than half the population.
