Google‘s Earthquake Alert System Faces Scrutiny in Turkey
Google’s Android earthquake Alerts (AEA) system, which leverages the vast network of Android devices making up over 70% of mobile phones in Turkey, has come under scrutiny for its performance. The system is designed to detect seismic activity by analyzing data from millions of Android phones. As seismic waves travel slower through the Earth than digital signals, the AEA system has the potential to issue warnings before an earthquake’s tremors reach users.
A spokesperson for Google acknowledged that “Every early warning system has to deal with the same challenge-the coordination of the algorithms to events great.” Though, scientists interviewed by the BBC expressed concern that it took over two years to receive information regarding issues with the early warning system.
Google has stated that its AEA system is intended to complement, not replace, national warning systems. Despite this, some experts worry that undue reliance might potentially be placed on this technology, which has not yet undergone complete testing. harold Tobin, director of the pacific Northwest Seismic Network, emphasized to the BBC the critical importance of transparency regarding the system’s effectiveness.
