Cuttack Under Lockdown Following Durga Puja Immersionโฃ violence
Cuttack,โข Odishaโค – October 5, โข2025 -โ Cuttack city is underโ aโ significant security lockdown following violent clashes that erupted during and after Durga Puja immersionโ processions on October 5th. The unrest led too fires, stone-throwingโฃ at emergency responders, and ultimately, a complete internetโ shutdown and the imposition of prohibitoryโ orders.
The โviolenceโ began near Gouriโฃ Shankar Park,โ where rioters โreportedly set โfires at 8-10 locations. Assistant Fire Officer Sanjeeb Kumar Behera confirmed his team extinguished the blazes but faced continued obstruction, including being targeted with stones. Police have been deployed to control the situation and prevent further โescalation, with additional forces stationed across key zonesโค and monitored by โขsenior officers.
Inโข response to the escalating tensions, the Odisha Homeโค Department suspended โall internet and data services within the Cuttack Municipal Corporationโ (CMC)โ area, the Cuttack Growthโข Authority (CDA) area, and the 42 Mauza Region. The order, effective from 7 pm on October 5th to 7 pm on October โ6th, cites concerns that “anti-social elements may โmisuseโ internet platforms to circulate false, provocative, โand inflammatory messages, threatening public peace,” referencing Section 5(2) ofโ the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Temporary Suspension of Telecom โServices (Public Emergency/Public Safety)โ Rules, 2017. โThis shutdownโ impacts access to platforms including โWhatsApp, โขFacebook, โInstagram, and X.
Alongsideโฃ the internet suspension, authorities have implemented prohibitory orders across 13 โคpoliceโค station areas, granting police expanded โคpowers to address potential troublemakers.
Puja committees have โขorganized demonstrations demanding the swiftโ arrest ofโ those involved in the initial attack. The Vishwa Hinduโข Parishad (VHP) has placed blame on the district governance โฃfor โฃfailing to ensureโฃ a peaceful immersion,โข requesting the transfer of โboth the Deputy Commissioner of โPolice (DCP) and the district collector. The VHPโ has announced aโข dawn-to-dusk โฃbandh (strike) for โขthe city on Octoberโค 6th.
Political reactions have been swift. The Biju โคJanata Dal (BJD) condemned the violence, attributing it to “anti-social elements”โ attempting toโฃ disrupt communal โฃharmony. BJD MP โSulata Deo criticized the current โฃgovernment, stating, โ”Cuttackโ is a cityโ of brotherhoodโฆ What happened is extremely unfortunate. This government can neither handle law and โorder nor protect women. As the BJP government came to power, the crime rate has increased.”
Odisha โChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has appealedโ for calm, expressing deepโ sorrow โคover theโข violence and assuring strict action against those responsible. The CMO โฃstated the government is “keeping an eye โon such elements” and will act according to the โlaw. Majhi has also directed officials to โprovide free medical care โฃto the injured and closely monitor sensitiveโข areas.
Police have โคreported making six โคarrests thus far โand are reviewing CCTV โขfootage,โฃ drone โฃimagery, and eyewitness accounts toโ identify additional suspects. Residents are being โฃurged to remain calm as the city โขprepares forโข the VHP-called bandh on Monday.
