AI Music Generation: Legal Battles, Record Label Deals & Artist Concerns

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Suno, the Cambridge-based artificial intelligence music generator, has secured licensing agreements with Warner Records, Universal Music Group, and Merlin, a global independent label rights agency, as it navigates a rapidly evolving legal landscape and seeks broader acceptance within the music industry.

The agreements come after Suno and its competitor, Udio, faced lawsuits in 2024 from major record labels alleging copyright infringement. The labels claimed the AI companies were exploiting the work of professional musicians to train their algorithms, which can then generate original songs based on text prompts.

Suno CEO Mikey Shulman stated the company’s intention to collaborate with the music industry, rather than work against it, recognizing the cultural importance of music and the need to bridge the gap between AI and traditional music creation. “We have always thought that working together with the music industry instead of against the music industry is the only way that this works,” Shulman said, according to reporting from WBUR.

The partnerships represent a significant shift for both the AI startups and the established music industry, which initially viewed AI-generated music as a threat. Udio has also reached licensing agreements with Warner, Universal, and Merlin, signaling a broader industry acceptance of the technology.

Despite these developments, skepticism remains within the artistic community. Concerns center on fair compensation for artists whose work is used to train AI models and the ethical implications of generating music that mimics existing styles. Some musicians fear that AI-generated music could devalue human creativity and potentially displace artists.

Singer and songwriter Tift Merritt, co-chair of the Artist Rights Alliance, has voiced concerns about the use of artists’ intellectual property without proper consent or remuneration. The debate highlights the tension between the potential benefits of AI as a creative tool and the need to protect the rights and livelihoods of musicians.

However, some artists are embracing AI as a tool to enhance their creative process. Christopher “Topher” Townsend, who uses the Suno platform under the pseudonym Solomon Ray, utilizes AI for various aspects of his music project, from composing melodies to designing album artwork. He emphasizes the accessibility and efficiency that AI tools offer to emerging artists.

Jonathan Wyner, a professor at the Berklee College of Music, views generative AI as a powerful tool for musicians, enabling them to explore new creative avenues and streamline their workflow. He acknowledges the potential for disruption but believes AI can augment, rather than replace, human artistry.

The legal battles continue, and the long-term impact of AI on the music industry remains uncertain. Suno and Udio are actively working to integrate their technology into the existing music ecosystem, but the question of how to fairly compensate artists and protect copyright remains a central challenge. Negotiations between the AI companies and record labels are ongoing, with no immediate resolution in sight.
