Insta360 Drones: A New Era for US Aerial Filmmaking Amidst DJI Scrutiny

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 26, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Insta360 is moving to fill a potential void in the U.S. Drone market as regulatory scrutiny of DJI, the dominant player in the industry, intensifies. The shift comes as the U.S. Government increases restrictions on Chinese drone manufacturers, raising concerns about national security and certification processes.

For over a decade, DJI has been the leading provider of drones for both consumers and professional filmmakers in the United States. Its products have develop into integral to aerial cinematography, shaping workflows for YouTubers, commercial crews, and major film productions. But, recent tightening of U.S. Regulations has created uncertainty around DJI’s future access to the American market, impacting product launches and long-term planning.

Insta360, a Chinese imaging company known for its 360 cameras and action cameras, is capitalizing on this uncertainty by entering the U.S. Drone market. The company’s move represents a potential structural shift in how aerial imaging tools are distributed to creators in the United States. Insta360 has built a brand around immersive capture, and its drones offer a different creative approach compared to DJI’s traditional stabilized single-lens systems.

The regulatory pressure on DJI stems from national security concerns, leading to more restrictive reviews and certification processes. While DJI products remain widely used, the uncertainty surrounding future approvals has created friction for both the company and its customers. This impacts not only DJI’s revenue but also the broader ecosystem of rental houses, production planning, and purchasing decisions.

Insta360’s strategy centers on 360-degree capture, allowing creators to reframe shots in post-production. This approach offers flexibility and post-production freedom, potentially appealing to filmmakers seeking alternative workflows. The company’s Antigravity A1 drone, for example, focuses on 360 capture and post-production reframing, contrasting with DJI’s emphasis on sensor size and lens diversity.

DJI currently dominates the U.S. Market with models like the Mavic 3 Pro, which offers a multi-camera system for versatile aerial cinematography, and the Mini 3 Pro, a lightweight drone popular among travel filmmakers. In July 2025, DJI released the Osmo 360, a 360 camera designed to compete directly with Insta360’s offerings, featuring 1-inch sensors and 8K/50fps video capability. The Osmo 360 is available in Standard and Adventure combos, priced at $549.99 and $699.99 respectively.

The shift in the market could lead to a more fragmented but also more experimental landscape for aerial cinematography. Filmmakers may begin evaluating alternative drone platforms earlier in the production cycle, and rental houses may diversify their inventory. Firmware updates, accessory compatibility, and even codec preferences could begin to diverge across regions as regulatory barriers continue to shape market access.

While DJI’s installed base remains massive and its technical expertise significant, the uncertainty surrounding its future in the U.S. Market creates an opportunity for competitors like Insta360. The next phase of aerial imaging may be influenced as much by regulatory frameworks as by technological advancements.
