A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed Monday afternoon after a fleeing motorcyclist allegedly shot him during a pursuit, authorities said. the suspect was deliberately forced off the motorcycle by an off-duty deputy, resulting in a high-speed crash.
The incident unfolded as deputies pursued a suspect on the 210 Freeway. At approximately 1:35 p.m., an off-duty sheriff’s deputy intervened legally, intentionally colliding with the suspect to end the chase and causing the motorcyclist to crash, according to Sheriff Shannon Dicus. The eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway between Mountain Avenue and Campus Avenue were closed following the accident as investigators processed the scene.
Helicopter footage captured the moment the suspect collided with a black sedan while traveling at 70 miles per hour, being thrown from the motorcycle and landing on his back. Paramedics transported the injured suspect via helicopter to a local hospital. The condition of the suspect is currently unknown. The fallen deputy’s name has not yet been released. This incident marks a significant loss for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and raises questions about the use of force during high-speed pursuits. The California Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
