Yemen and China Discuss Enhanced Partnership for Development and Infrastructure
Sana’a, Yemen – November 12, 2023 – YemenS Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Dr. Shawi Al-Zindani, held discussions today wiht zhao Cheng, Chargé d’Affairs of the People’s Republic of china to Yemen, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and bolstering Yemen’s development efforts. The meeting, held in Sana’a, signals a renewed commitment from both nations to expand cooperation across key sectors.
The talks centered on collaborative opportunities in energy and infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on supporting electricity projects crucial for Yemen’s recovery. Chinese investment in the Yemeni market was a key topic, aiming to improve essential services and stimulate economic growth. Specific areas explored included potential projects in the port city of Aden, and the Marib Dam region, vital for power generation.
Both parties addressed the importance of streamlining trade through enhanced customs cooperation,ensuring food safety standards,and facilitating the adoption of certificates of origin. Discussions also included leveraging preferential trade facilities for Yemeni exports to China, possibly increasing revenue from commodities like coffee and dates – currently valued at approximately $25 million annually.
Dr. Al-zindani briefed zhao Cheng on the outcomes of his recent visit to Aden, where he met with various government agencies to assess their development needs. He highlighted the enduring strength of Yemen-China relations and the potential for expansion through new service and development initiatives. He specifically mentioned the need for support in rebuilding Aden’s infrastructure,damaged during recent conflicts.
Minister al-Zindani expressed gratitude for China’s existing initiatives in training, capacity building, and healthcare programs, acknowledging their contribution to the Belt and Road Initiative.He reaffirmed the Yemeni government’s dedication to fostering cooperation with Beijing, prioritizing mutually beneficial outcomes. The Yemeni government is seeking approximately $5 billion in aid and investment over the next five years, with China identified as a key potential partner.
Zhao Cheng reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Yemen’s development path, focusing on infrastructure, capacity building, and expanding economic and trade cooperation.he emphasized China’s willingness to explore joint ventures in renewable energy,especially solar and wind power,to address Yemen’s energy deficit. China has previously provided Yemen with approximately $100 million in humanitarian aid since 2015.
