AI-Generatedโ Image Leads to Arrest in St. Petersburg
St. โฃPetersburg police have arrested Schinault and charged her wiht two counts of false reporting of a crime after โคshe allegedly used artificial โฃintelligence to fabricate aโ suspect in a case – โขa suspect who did not exist. The case highlights a growing concern about the โขmisuse of increasingly sophisticated AI technology.
The incident came to light asโค a trend emerged online โฃwhere individuals were using AI tools to โฃalter images of their โขliving rooms, adding โpeople into the pictures for amusement. However,โฃ police โsay Schinault’s actions were far from a joke.
“It can โฃbe very hazardous,” stated Limardo of theโ St. โPetersburg Police Department. “Especially in a senseโ of โwhatโข if this person had matched the description of someone in our town or they tried to claim it was someone, now we’re going after that one person.”
Schinault is currently out of jail on bonds totaling $1,000.
Professor Dr. John Licato, of the University ofโ South Florida’s Billeni College ofโ AI, Cybersecurity and Computing,โฃ noted that malicious use of technology is not new, โbut โขthe capabilities of AI are raising new challenges. “When โฃI โฃhear โขthat particular story, my immediate thought is,โ ‘What’s the motivation? Why โขwould anyone actuallyโค doโ this?'” he said.
Licato emphasized the need for increased public understanding โof AI’s potential.”We โneed to increase the amount of AI โคliteracy amongst the โขgeneral โคpublic for โฃreason like exactly thisโข case,”โค he explained. he pointed out that law enforcement’s awarenessโ of the “memes” โขand โข”TikTok trend” surrounding AIโ image manipulationโ demonstrated aโ growing understanding of the technology’s capabilities. “The cops, they saw the memesโฆand, โin a sense, that was a form โขof AI โคliteracy.”
The St. โPetersburg โcase isn’t isolated. In Hillsborough County, โข19-year-old Sammarth โGautam was โฃarrested โafterโข using AI โtoโ transform social media photos of clothed acquaintances into AI-generated nudeโ images, posting eight of them online. during interrogation, โGautam admitted to being drivenโ by curiosity about theโข technology. “So, I was justโฃ really starting โคto hear things aboutโ AI and the differentโ things โขthat it โcould do,” Gautam stated in interrogationโค tapes. “And I know I shouldn’t have, but โI kind of got curious, and I just wanted to use the technology to see whatโค it could do.”
Gautam ultimately pleaded guilty โคto 16 counts of promoting altered sexual depictions without consent and served 12 days inโ jail. โHe has since been taken into custodyโค by โคimmigration enforcement and โฃis awaitingโ deportation in an ICE holding facility in New Mexico.
Licato stressed the importance of establishing appropriate safeguards and regulations for AI technology. “We do have to watch out and make sure that we put proper safeguards to help protect people,” โhe said, drawing a parallel to vehicle โregulations.โค “They made it so thereโ was the right level of balance between restrictions and โขguidance. I think thatโข we need thatโ with any new technology.”
Bayโข News 9’sโฃ attemptsโค to reach Schinault forโ commentโ were unsuccessful.
