India Clinch T20 Series Victory Over Australia as Final Match Abandoned Due to Rain
Brisbane, Australia - India secured a 2-1 victory in their five-match T20 International series against Australia after the final match in Brisbane was called off due to persistent rain on saturday. Play was halted after just 4.5 overs with India having reached 52 for no loss, ultimately leading to the abandonment of the contest.
The series win marks a positive outcome for India ahead of their T20 World Cup title defense on home soil next year, showcasing depth in their squad and resilience after initially falling behind in the series.Despite the disrupted final match, the tour provided valuable playing time and insights for both teams as they prepare for future challenges.
India’s innings had begun brightly, with openers Abhishek Sharma (23 not out) and Shubman Gill (29 not out) quickly establishing a strong foundation. Gill was especially aggressive, hitting six fours during his innings. Abhishek benefited from dropped catches by Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis.
The Gabba crowd remained hopeful for a resumption of play for over two and a half hours, but the inclement weather proved unrelenting. The first match of the series in Canberra was also washed out, while Australia won the second T20 in melbourne by four wickets, spearheaded by Josh Hazlewood’s bowling.
India rebounded to win the third T20 in Hobart by five wickets and dominated the fourth match on the Gold Coast, securing a 48-run victory. Abhishek Sharma was named Player of the Series for his remarkable tally of 163 runs at an average of 40.75.
“The way everybody chipped in in every game and we came back from being one match down, I think credit goes to all the boys; a complete team effort,” said India captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Australia captain Mitch Marsh acknowledged India’s performance, stating, “I thought all in all it was a good series, two teams really going at it. India won the games when it mattered, so congratulations to them.”
