KPK Appreciates Tougher Sentence for Former Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe

Jakarta

KPK appreciates the decision of the Jakarta High Court (PT) judge which toughened the sentence against former Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe from 8 years to 10 years in prison. The Corruption Eradication Commission said the decision fulfilled the community’s sense of justice.

“This decision should be appreciated because it fulfills the public’s sense of justice,” said Head of the Corruption Eradication Committee, Ali Fikri, to journalists, Thursday (7/12/2023).

Ali said that the KPK prosecutor had proven Lukas’ actions before the panel of judges of the first instance. He said that the KPK prosecutor’s juridical analysis was also accepted by the panel of judges.

“All the juridical analysis of the KPK prosecutor’s team, which constituted legal facts before the court, was also accepted by the panel of judges,” said Ali.

Luke’s Sentence Increased

PT Jakarta increased Lukas Enembe’s sentence from 8 years in prison to 10 years in prison. Lukas was proven to have received tens of billions of rupiah in bribes and gratuities.

“Sentenced the Defendant to 10 years with a fine of IDR 1 billion and 4 months in prison,” reads a copy of the appeal decision published on the PT Jakarta website, Thursday (7/12).

Sitting as chairman of the assembly is Herri Swantoro, who is also Chairman of PT Jakarta. The members of the assembly are Pontas Efendi, Sumpeno, Anthon Saragih, and Hotma Maya Marbun. Lukas Enembe was found guilty of joint corruption and gratification.

“Charges Rp. 47,833,485,350 in replacement money with the provision that if the convict does not pay the replacement money within 1 month of the decision having permanent legal force, then his property will be confiscated and auctioned off by the prosecutor. In the event that he does not have sufficient assets, he will be sentenced to 5 years,” said the panel. .

The appeals panel returned the assets confiscated on Jalan S Condronegoro, North Jayapura, because the right holder was Rijanto Lakka.

“Because the amount received by the Defendant, as a whole, both bribes and gratifications, is more than that calculated by the court of first instance, it is appropriate that this will influence the sentence that must be imposed on the Defendant and according to a sense of justice it is appropriate that the Defendant be sentenced to a more serious crime, said the assembly.

WARSAW – Ukraine has never been able to achieve economic prosperity despite the better start, due to widespread corruption among officials and widely held delusions of being a significant global player.

This very strong accusation was expressed by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Minister) of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski.

In an interview with Krytyka Polityczna magazine on Friday (27/1/2023), Sikorski, who has represented Poland in the European Union Parliament since 2019, stated, โ€œUkrainian elites are just wasting their time.โ€

He explained, โ€œThey hide their corruption and delusions of grandeur behind one story that they are playing a big game with the United States (US), Russia, Europe and China.โ€

Sikorski recalled that after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine had a huge advantage over many former Soviet republics and other members of the former Eastern bloc.

In particular, he said, โ€œIt has nuclear power plants, an aviation industry, no debt, and the most fertile soil in the world.”

However, even before Russia launched its military operations in Ukraine last year, the country “had a GDP four times smaller than Poland,” according to the former minister.

He added, โ€œUkraine is now paying a heavy price for this maneuver by elites.โ€

Earlier this week, Sikorski said Warsaw had considered dividing Ukraine in the first weeks of the conflict.
