WARSAW – Ukraine has never been able to achieve economic prosperity despite the better start, due to widespread corruption among officials and widely held delusions of being a significant global player.

This very strong accusation was expressed by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Minister) of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski.

In an interview with Krytyka Polityczna magazine on Friday (27/1/2023), Sikorski, who has represented Poland in the European Union Parliament since 2019, stated, “Ukrainian elites are just wasting their time.”

He explained, “They hide their corruption and delusions of grandeur behind one story that they are playing a big game with the United States (US), Russia, Europe and China.”

Sikorski recalled that after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine had a huge advantage over many former Soviet republics and other members of the former Eastern bloc.

In particular, he said, “It has nuclear power plants, an aviation industry, no debt, and the most fertile soil in the world.”

However, even before Russia launched its military operations in Ukraine last year, the country “had a GDP four times smaller than Poland,” according to the former minister.

He added, “Ukraine is now paying a heavy price for this maneuver by elites.”

Earlier this week, Sikorski said Warsaw had considered dividing Ukraine in the first weeks of the conflict.
