Niles Suspends Free Bus Service Following Insurance Dispute with Pace
Niles, IL – September 16, 2025 – The Village of Niles has temporarily suspended its free bus service, impacting routes 410, 411, and 412, due to a disagreement with Pace regarding insurance coverage and liability.A village news release issued sunday detailed the decision, stating it was made after Pace declined to continue covering insurance costs and provide indemnification against potential liability as outlined in their contract.
The free bus routes, which previously operated seven days a week connecting residents to shopping centers, schools, the library, and apartment complexes, are heavily utilized by seniors and individuals with limited mobility. Village officials expressed concern over the potential impact of the suspension on these populations and stated they are exploring ways to assist affected residents.
According to past assessments by Pace, ridership on the combined routes was under 750 passengers daily, a figure noted during a modernization project approximately a decade ago. While the village subsidizes the service, it had been seeking continued assistance from Pace.
“The Village cannot in good conscience continue operations without adequate insurance protections in place,” the release stated. “The safety of our residents and employees, and the legal integrity of our municipal operations, must remain paramount.”
Village officials and staff are currently engaged in ongoing discussions with Pace and state representatives to find a resolution. Residents are encouraged to monitor the village website for updates as they become available. pace has not yet responded to requests for comment.
