Mormon Church Leaders Emphasize Forgiveness following Michigan Shooting
SALT LAKE CITY - Following a shooting at a church building in Farmington Hills, michigan, that left one critically injured, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints are encouraging members to respond with forgiveness and compassion. The incident occurred Saturday during a meeting of a local congregation, prompting an outpouring of concern and support from church officials and members worldwide.
The shooting took place shortly after the passing of church president Russell M. Nelson, age 101, last Saturday, as thousands gathered for a bi-annual general conference. While the conference served as a unifying event for the faith’s global membership, the Michigan attack cast a somber tone. Elder Dallin H. oaks, who recently assumed the presidency following Nelson’s death, is expected to address the incident during the conference’s conclusion on Sunday.
According to farmington Hills Police, a 70-year-old man shot a 67-year-old woman before being subdued by othre church members. The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the shooting.
“We are deeply saddened by this act of violence and extend our love and prayers to the injured woman and her family,” said church spokesperson Sam Penrod in a statement.”We also commend the quick actions of those who intervened to protect others.”
The emphasis on forgiveness aligns with teachings consistently promoted by church leadership, including the late President Nelson and now President Oaks. Oaks, a 93-year-old former Utah Supreme Court justice, is known for his traditionalist convictions and has previously spoken about maintaining civil discourse and denouncing violence.
Gwenieth Wisdom, a church member who traveled from Jamaica to attend the general conference, expressed hope that Oaks will continue Nelson’s emphasis on unity and compassion. “We are taught to love our neighbors and to forgive those who trespass against us,” she said. “That is what President Nelson exemplified, and we hope to see that continue under President Oaks’ leadership.”
The Church of Jesus christ of Latter-day Saints has over 17 million members worldwide. The Farmington Hills Michigan Stake, where the shooting occurred, comprises multiple congregations serving communities in Oakland County. Church leaders have offered counseling and support services to members affected by the incident.
