Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, Expanding Flagshipโฃ Chipset โฃOptions
SAN โคDIEGO, CA – โขDecember 13, 2024 -โ Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a new mobileโฃ platform designed to โbring flagship-level โขperformanceโข to a wider range of smartphones. Unveiled after the novemberโฃ release of the high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the 8 Gen โ5 โคoffers a โsimilar feature set with some performance adjustments to accommodate a more affordable โprice point.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 boasts a 36 percentโค improvement in CPU performance โฃand โan โค11 percent โimprovement in GPU performance compared to the 2023 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It utilizes a comparable โOryon CPU structure to theโ 8 Elite Gen 5, though with slightly reduced clock speeds: six performance cores โขreaching โฃup to 3.32GHz and two prime cores at 3.8GHz โข(compared to 3.62GHz and 4.6GHzโ in the Elite).
While specifications areโค slightly lower than the 8 Elite Gen 5โฃ – including a slower X80โ modem withโ reduced peak 5G speeds and downgraded Adreno GPU and โขHexagon AI NPU specs – the 8โ Gen 5 maintains support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, satellite โconnectivity, and ultra โฃwideband (UWB) technology. It will not support โคthe latest โUFS 4.1 storage. charging capabilities,โค display support, and the majority of camera hardware โขoptions remain consistent between the โฃtwo chipsets.
Several manufacturers, including Motorola, โOnePlus, and Vivo,โฃ have โcommitted โto integrating the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 into upcoming devices. The first phones featuring the new chipset are โฃexpected to launch “in the coming weeks,” with the OnePlus โฃ15R confirmed toโ launch โin the US on December 17th.
