Apple Replaces AI Chief as Company Falls Behind in AIโ Race
CUPERTINO, CA – Apple has replaced โคJohn Giannandrea as head of its artificial intelligenceโ division, the company announced Monday, signaling a meaningful shift in strategy as it โขstruggles โคto compete with rivals in โthe rapidly evolving AI landscape. โAmar Subramanya,โฃ a 16-year veteran of Google who ledโค engineeringโฃ for the company’s Gemini assistant,โ will assume the role.
Theโฃ move comes after Apple delayed the launch of its planned “Apple Intelligence” and next-generation Siri – initiallyโค slatedโ for release this year, now pushed to 2026 – and a largely unsuccessful attempt toโฃ integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri, which users foundโค “clunky.” Giannandrea, whoโข joined Apple โin 2018,will beโค transitioning โout of the company.
Apple’s decision to restructure โขits AI leadership and bringโข Siri growth underโ the software engineering group led by Craig Federighi, announced inโฃ March, followed by the removal of itsโฃ robotics research โgroup fromโค Giannandrea’s AI division in April, underscores the โขcompany’s acknowledgment โขofโข falling behind competitors.
Despite its advantages – a loyal user base, strong data โprivacy reputation, and control over both hardware and software – Apple has yet to deliver aโฃ compelling โAI experience.โข The company is now weighing whether to prioritize โคdeveloping its own AI models or relying on those createdโฃ by โother companies, such as Google’s Gemini.
Apple stock closed โup $4.25 (1.52%) at $283.10 following the proclamation. The company expects increased focus and pressure to deliver new AI features and a smarter Siri acrossโฃ its devices.
