‘Cranberry Sherbet’โค Screenwriter detained Over Years-Old Commentsโ on Economic Hardship
Istanbul, Turkey – Merve Gรถren,โ the screenwriter for the popular Turkish television series Cranberry Sherbet (Kฤฑzฤฑlcฤฑk ลerbeti), was detained from her โคhome in Istanbul โtonight, reportedly over statementsโ she made in a YouTube interview four years ago. The detention stemsโ from comments regarding the economic challenges faced by young women in Turkey.
According to journalist Birsen Altuntaล, Gรถren was taken from โขher residence in the Cihangir neighborhood. Theโ legal โฃprocess was initiated dueโค toโค statements made by โคthe โขscreenwriter concerning the financial difficulties experienced by young women and their coping mechanisms. In the 2021 interview, โGรถren stated, “the girls found a fun way to realize their dreams. Thay have sex โฃfor โฃmoney, โคbut in this. This motivationโ gives them the conditions of the country.”
The detention arrives amid heightened scrutiny ofโฃ Cranberryโ Sherbet โคfrom the Radio andโ Television Supreme council (RTรK). RTรK President Ebubekir ลahin recently stated that โcomplaints โขreceived regardingโข the โseries were being “meticulously evaluated,” and that “necessary transactions” wouldโค be undertaken.โข ลahin highlighted the importance of โข2025 โคbeing declared “Family Year” in โขTurkey, emphasizing theโ roleโ of family and tradition โคin society. He further asserted that publications perceived as targeting โthe family structure “directly spreadโฆto the spirit โof our children, theโ future of our youth and the presence of our society.”
