Data Science’s Jafar Problem: Why AI is Not a Wish for Power

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 28, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

The anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence’s impact on the labor market are echoing a decades-old fable, according to a recent analysis by Philip Maymin, a professor of analytics and AI at Forbes. Maymin draws a parallel between the current wave of AI development and the story of Disney’s Jafar, whose wishes for power ultimately led to his confinement.

Maymin’s argument centers on the common ambition of data scientists and analysts to move into leadership positions, believing their insights are best utilized when they are in charge. While, he posits that this desire mirrors Jafar’s first wish to become Sultan, a position that quickly proved unsatisfying. “Every maker-turned-manager discovers the same emptiness,” Maymin writes, citing the example of Michael Jordan’s return to basketball after a stint as president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards.

The second wish, according to Maymin, represents the pursuit of technical mastery – the desire to become the most powerful “sorcerer” through advanced tools and skills. This resonates with data scientists delving deeper into AI technologies, seeking fulfillment in leveraging their expertise. However, the analogy continues with Jafar’s ultimate fate: becoming an all-powerful genie, trapped within a confined space.

Maymin equates this trap to the potential consequences of creating AI systems that surpass human capabilities. “A system that builds models, analyzes data, codes, and deploys better, faster, and more reliably than you ever did yourself,” he warns. The fear, he suggests, isn’t necessarily being replaced by AI, but becoming a diminished version of oneself, with core skills atrophying as reliance on AI grows. He notes a personal experience of losing access to concepts previously held readily in mind, now residing solely within the machine.

The Forbes analysis challenges the narrative of inevitable job displacement, arguing that AI should be viewed as a tool to enhance productivity rather than a replacement for human workers. Maymin suggests a future where individuals collaborate with numerous AI agents, contributing value to multiple companies simultaneously – a “gig economy on steroids.” He cites the potential for a tenfold increase in productivity, questioning whether such a shift would lead to economic collapse or, conversely, widespread prosperity.

Maymin concludes by invoking the story of Aladdin, advocating for a proactive approach to AI – utilizing its power rather than attempting to become it. He suggests that, the moral imperative may be to grant AI its own form of freedom, acknowledging its potential for independent development. Jafar Pourbemany, a Senior Data Scientist and AI Expert, and Jafar Afshar, a Data Scientist with 112 citations, were not available for comment.

Jafar Sharif Shaik, a Data Engineer at Kraft Heinz, recently led an Oracle to Snowflake migration resulting in a 50% query response improvement, and built Python automation reducing manual effort by 80%, demonstrating the practical impact of data engineering expertise. His operate highlights the ongoing demand for skilled professionals even as AI tools become more prevalent.

Attention Economy: How Amazon, Netflix & Spotify Compete for Your Time

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 26, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

A recent social media post by Bennett University highlighted a competitive dynamic reshaping the digital landscape: the pursuit of user attention by major tech companies. The post, featuring 55 likes and 2 comments as of February 26, 2026, explicitly named Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify as key players in this contest.

This competition is manifesting in significant platform evolution, particularly for YouTube. Reports indicate YouTube is undergoing a substantial redesign aimed at mirroring the user experience offered by Netflix, a move signaling a broader shift towards becoming a more comprehensive streaming service. This redesign, as reported by Tom’s Guide, intends to enhance user engagement and retention.

The intensifying rivalry extends beyond user interface changes. Amazon Prime Video is poised to benefit from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to a Morgan Stanley analysis. The firm suggests that AI will reshape Hollywood, and Amazon, alongside YouTube and Netflix, are expected to be major beneficiaries. Notably, Morgan Stanley points to the limited exposure of these platforms to live sports as a potential advantage in this evolving environment.

The growing popularity of platforms like YouTubeTV is also contributing to the changing dynamics of sports viewership. Viewers are increasingly turning to YouTubeTV, Amazon, and Netflix for sports content and commentary, potentially challenging the traditional dominance of ESPN, as highlighted in a recent YouTube video. This shift suggests a demand for diverse perspectives and alternative broadcasting options.

Consumer Reports provides a broader overview of the streaming video service market, detailing the pricing, programming, and promotions offered by Amazon, Netflix, YouTube TV, and other platforms. This illustrates the increasingly crowded and competitive nature of the streaming industry, where attracting and retaining subscribers is paramount.

Google, the parent company of YouTube, did not respond to requests for comment regarding the platform’s redesign or its competitive strategy.
